As taught by the widely popular high school intervention program, a person dies from drunk driving related incidents every fifteen minutes. Most people in today’s society know someone or are related to someone who has been affected by someone who was driving under the influence. The statistics, while improving are still frightening. Mother’s Against Drunk Driving lists many shocking facts about drunk driving in attempt to push legislation to prevent drunk driving. “On average, two in three people will be involved in a drunk driving crash in their lifetime.” Unfortunately, you are more likely than not to be affected by this issue, including approximately 12,111 students at Cal Poly.Most often, when drunk driving occurs, it is due to the lack of intervening by someone who sees the potential dangers of the situation. By keeping the blame off the sober students, Cal Poly can focus more on informing students on warning signs of tragedies such as drinking and driving. If intoxicated students are able to take advantage of this new policy, Cal Poly will then seem more tolerant of underage drinking. However, this is not what Cal Poly wishes to promote and there is one way this issue can be avoided altogether.While I originally believed that simple sobriety tests would be effective, my partner Joanne brought to my attention that these tests would prove invalid. Say for instance a student only had one or two beers, this student would be more than likely be able to pass a sobriety test. However even drinking one to two beers violates Cal Poly’s policies about underage alcohol consumption, and should therefore be punished. The only way to truly tell if a student has participated in underage drinking or not is to have advisors be approved to use a breathalyzer on the students. If a student were to refuse to take a breathalyzer test, law enforcement could be called for assistance. This policy is still ensuring the punishment of underage drinking while simotaneously promoting
