Cal Newport's Three Core Values

One theory that puzzles the most of the people in the Cal Newport’s video is “following your passion, is a bad advice.” This goes along with Brian’s question about “how following your passion to enjoy your job, was actually a bad way to become passionate?” I think Cal Newport confuses the most of the people with the idea of “passion” versus “talent”. If we were to define the word passion and a talent, it will be. Passion is something that we have for something and act of doing something; we are not born with that. Talent is something that we are born with. The underlying message of Cal’s theory is that passion does not align with skill or talent. Frist, “Legacy: what you care about, what you are driven by, and what change you want to create in the world, for others and for future generations” ( Koloe 1). Second, “Mastery: you need to seek mastery by understanding what skills are valued by the market you want to be working in, what skills you can and want to become excellent at relative to your competition, and how you can align the two”(Koloe 1). Lastly, “Freedom: cultivating and exchanging the value your mastery provides in such a way that you progressively gain the ability to do work that is in alignment with your legacy, on your own terms” (Koloe 1). Overall, these values also highlights that a same common theme that Cal Newport was talking about, there is a perfect career out there for every individual that will fit their needs, if only we could find what kind of skills or talent we have.
