Transgender is a topic that is seen as controversial to many, while being inspirational to others. Transgender can be defined as “people whose gender identity is different from the biological sex assigned to them at birth” (possibly find exact quote) (Human Rights Campaign). Bruce Jenner, known for his former marriage to reality star Kris Jenner, and Olympic success, made headlines in 2015 with his decision to transition into a woman. Through his struggles, Bruce Jenner soon came to be Caitlyn Jenner. Caitlyn’s journey marks a period of inspiration for many around the world. “For all intense purposes I am a woman” (Jenner). It took Caitlyn all her life to realize that she had to make a change in her life in order to feel that her new identity is who she always was on the inside. Many people face this struggle and Caitlyn, through her transformation was able to encourage and motive others to take a stand and bring awareness to the topic of trans-gender citizens. Many people go through life not understanding why they feel a certain way on the inside, but look differently on the outside. People who are openly facing these issues fall under many criticisms and are affected physically, emotionally and psychologically as a result of finding their true identity. Keenan says “one’s identity depends not just on one element of gender, or race, or class, or sexuality but on an understanding that all of these things affect an individual simultaneously” (65). Going against the hegemonic practices of identity and having support from many are reasons why going through the everyday struggles are set aside.
