Brook and Caitlin had, Caitlin meets Michael. Michael is younger than her as well as in a much younger grade. Caitlin is drawn to Michael because he wears a red baseball cap like her brother Devon use to wear. As she walked closer she realized that he was upset and crying and this was the beginning of their friendship. After talking they realized that they both have lost someone and this is the first step for them to find closure (Erskine 56-61). They kept talking every day and it seemed to help them both, but, it especially gave Caitlin what she needed, closure. They got along so well that they created a secret wave (Erskine 61). As the book moves on they get even closer and do more and more things for each other. They attend each other's plays and musicals, school benefits and just hang out at recess. They even work together to get their dads to talk to each other in optimism for them to get closure from this school
