Caine Performance Hall Concert Report

Upon first entering the Caine Performance Hall, my tickets were quickly taken and I was ushered into a moderately sized room and asked to find a seat. The walls within the room were covered with elaborate panelling - no doubt to improve the acoustics. There were 4 sections of seats and since I was a little late I took a seat in the back, however, because of the small scale of the performance room, I didn’t feel as if I was far from the stage. When the performers came out, the whole production felt very intimate which helped me to really feel and attempt to understand the complex music. The average age of others attending the concert was between 35-60, there were only a few younger people in attendance. Because of the more mature crowd, everyone …show more content…
Before the quartet began to play, they each came forward and gave the audience some background and a bit of a history lesson about the composer and why they had chosen their piece to end their performance. Their final piece was String Quartet no.6 by Bela Bartok. According to the members of the act, Bartok wrote his composition right before WWII broke out across Europe and his distaste for the Hitler regime and the feeling of fear and sadness are evident in his music written during this time. One of the most fascinating aspects of this particular piece was it’s lack of any cohesive rhythm. It was almost painfully enjoyable to listen to in certain parts because of the unexpected twists the disjunct melody followed. There were mis-plucked chords, slips of bows, and occasionally the violist hit his instrument making a sort of banging noise. The piece was also interesting because of the instrumental timbre elements featured throughout. Where most songs have the violinists as the prominent instruments while the cellists and violists give depth and added sound this song had the violist as the prominent instrumental sound for much of the

Two violins, one viola, and a cello played Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet, Op. 76, No.3 (Emperor), II in quadruple meter and in the form of one homophonic theme with four polyphonic variations. The theme is introduced by the entire quartet in an conjunct melody that has three unique phrases. The first phrase, “A”, is the first to be introduced and repeated a second time, “A-A”. Phrase “A” moves smoothly from mid to high in ascending and descending conjunct intervals and is repeated.…

For the Violins, I chose Solo Violin. The sound is very shrill, dry, and cold. This made the lyrical sections hard to record. For the Viola, there actually was a sound called “Viola”. This voice shared similar qualities with the solo violin midi voice.…

This Stony Brook University performance was the first time I was exposed to any performance, so throughout the concert, there were many things that stuck out to me. The first thing that stuck out to me was the dress code. Upon arrival, I was surprised by dozens in very formal outfits. Once I was in the auditorium I did notice that there were indeed no phones, people talking or people eating. I saw the pride and excitement in some of the families faces as the performance began.…

This piece was performed by the Orchestra. Moreover, it started of soft (piano) with the string family and percussion family as well. The piece was more relaxing, smooth and really good to hear. It does get louder as the piece goes on. This piece was short, however it was a beautiful tune to listen to.…

Fredi Pritchett Music 110-08B December 2, 106 J.S. Bach Mass in B Minor On November 5, 2016, I attended the J.S. Bach Mass in B Minor music concert at Converse College, featuring a performance by the Spartanburg Festival Chorus. I enjoyed the musical selections performed by the chorus and saw a few familiar faces of some of my classmates at the concert as well. The venue of the concert was very nice and a lot of older people attended the concert.…

I’m sitting alone in the front pew of the University of Virginia Chapel on a cold December night. In front of me there is a tall metal stand with a set of bongos perched precariously atop. Behind me sits the entire crowd of the sold out Virginia Women’s Chorus Candlelight Concert. When I arrived in Charlottesville months earlier, I could have never expected to be here. I have just finished performing a piece with the chorus minutes earlier, when a member of the chorus steps forward and addresses the audience to explain and introduce the next piece.…

Last evening I attended opening night of Romeo and Juliet. Since I am not as well versed as many of you on the technicalities of ballet, my review will be strictly my impressions and appreciation. For me, the performance had its ups and downs. The audience, including me, was most energized and excited by two elements: (1) the strong performances, swordplay, energy, and command of the stage by Joaquin de Luz as Tybalt and Daniel Ulbricht as Mercutio. Wow!…

With both instruments almost in unison with each other, they both complemented the music being produced from each other’s instruments. Both instruments start to slowly fade out than it came back in at a Fortissimo dynamic range and presto tempo to bring the audiences attention back in. My own opinion is that the composer was trying to scare the audience and give them the feeling he had when he lost Mary Gray. Near the end, the guitar became the only instrument left playing and the sound became slow and soft, probably representing the death of Mary Gray. The second piece performed was titled Cavatina.…

The second concert to go to was on saturday November 4th at 8pm at Stony Brook University’s Staller center. The atmosphere of being at staller felt pleasant and relatable as I was not going to the symphony just for an assignment, but rather as a guest ready for a good show. Awaiting for the symphony to begin, sitting at the top final row on the room, I realized my surrounding was that large amounts of older folks wore presentable outfits, students with casual attire, and the orchestra wearing white and black. As in any other concert, the audience behavior before the start of the program was settling down and reading the little pamphlet that was placed on top of their seat preparing for the show. After the concerto finished, the audience rose…

Moreover, since it was a solo performance, there was no communication among performers. Even though I could not see the performer because he was hide behind the organ, I could feel that I was putting a lot of energy in this piece to make it dramtic. Just by the way he would hit the peddles it resound in the Hall. The musical composition I liked the least was Prélude et fugue en mi mineur composed by Johann Sebastian Bach.…

The variety in this piece is that the soloist are going back and forth between their parts as if they are having a conversation or are saying something that they are all in agreement. The style of this piece is very uplifting as if to say “we are all in this together.” A point of unity is in the instruments and chorus, during this piece they were both strictly just the background sound. In many other piece, they have had their own parts and to describe it “responsibilities of their own” but they were just the behind the scenes in this piece, only to make the soloists sound the best they could. Whenever the soloist’s dynamic changed, the instruments would do the same to complement.…

The instruments are all moving quickly and playing different and conflicting parts all over one another, which creates an interesting and energetic sound. I liked having this energetic and lively section towards the end of the piece. It created anticipation and excitement while listening, while also revisiting some of the initial musical sections from the first movement. I thought that the revisiting of initial musical pieces tied the whole thing together, by showing the connection through the first and last movements. I thought it was interesting that this movement ended with a downbeat, as it initially started with an…

I learned that there are different movements in pieces. For the first half of the concert I kept thinking the piece was over and was wondering why the conductor wasn’t stepping away and why no one was clapping. It turns out that the orchestra was actually just transitioning into the next movement of the piece. The first piece, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concert, mvt 3 had two separate movements.…

I attended the ballet Today 's Masters on April 25 at the Orpheum Theatre. This was the first ballet that I had attended as well as my son’s first. I have always been fascinated by the ballet and the talent of the ballerinas. The dancers always show such finesse and tranquil composure during their performances that I wanted to experience that first hand in a live show. I choose to go watch Today’s Masters as it was said to cover a whole spectrum of ballet from classical to contemporary.…
