Maya Angelou was an author, poet, historian,songwriter, playwright, dancer, stage and screen producer, director, performer, singer and civil rights activist. According to http://mayaangelou.com/ She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, several books of poetry, and was credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years. Maya was born on April 4,1928 in St Louis, MO and died May 28,2014 in Winston-Salem, NC. Maya’s full name is Marguerite Ann Johnson. Maya won over 50 honorary degrees and wrote seven autobiographies.

Maya went to George Washington High school and California labor School.The California Labor School, formerly the Tom Mooney Labor School, was an educational house in San Francisco from 1942 to the 1950s. George Washington High School is a public high school in Richmond District, San Francisco, California. Maya Angelou was also an educator and served as the Reynolds professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University.

With the guidance of her friend, the novelist James Baldwin, she began work on the book that would become I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Published in 1970, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings received international acclaim made the bestseller list. The book was also banned in many schools during that time as Maya Angelou’s honesty about having been sexually abused opened a subject matter that had long been taboo in the culture. Later, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings would become a course adoption at college campuses around the world. With more than 30 bestselling titles, Maya Angelou has written 36 books.
