Have you ever felt isolated from everyone else just because of how you look? Have you ever been labeled because of something that happened to you? Have people ever judged you for something that is completely out of your control? If so, then you’ll understand exactly how Marguerite feels in I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. This book is an autobiographical narrative of Maya Angelou’s life with herself as the main character. Other important characters include her older brother Bailey, her grandmother, whom she calls Momma, and Uncle Willie. Marguerite is an African-American girl growing up in Stamps, Arkansas and California in the late 1960’s. Throughout the book she experiences the harsh reality of racism mixed with the confusion
