The purpose of this experiment was to see if either caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee affected a plant’s overall health. Its health is determined by the plat’s height over the course of thirty days, the plants’’ mass on the thirtieth day, and its chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b concentration. The majority of the world has become acquainted with the well known stimulant caffeine. Not much is known about any effect caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee may have on plants The fast plants were planted, and every three days their measurements of height were taken with a centimeter ruler. Then, each plant was taken out of the soil, and all the excess soil was taken off. Some of the plant, 0.01g, to be exact, was cut from the plant. The plant then had its mass measured and it was recorded. Next, that 0.01g of leaf was ground up with 3mL of 85% acetone solution for five minutes. The mixture was filtered then supplemented to 3mL. It was put through a spectrophotometer and had its absorbance level read. The absorbance amounts at 663 nm and 644 nm were used in two equations to calculate the concentration of chlorophyll in each …show more content…
Sixty nine percent of all the p-values calculated for the measurements of height were statistically significant, but they were not linear. The chlorophyll data had an abnormal result as the control chlorophyll concentration was much higher than that of the plants treated with decaffeinated or caffeinate coffee. The results also contradicted both earlier studies and the hypothesis. An earlier study showed the lack of germination of seeds treated with caffeine, however in this study, the sample with the fastest growth rate was a group that was treated with caffeinated coffee. It contradicts the hypothesis because caffeine’s aide or lack thereof, is not statistically significant, neither is decaffeinated coffee’s help or lack of help.
