What is the one thing that many of us cannot go a single day without? If you are anything like me, you head straight for the coffee pot once you wake up. Although some may joke that we are coffee addicts, could the actually be right? According to Healthreasearchfunding.org,” at least 68 million Americans drink up to three cups of coffee every day and 30 million drink up to six cups a day.” Today I will tell you all about caffeine and how it actually affects the Human body. First I will tell you about how caffeine can be harmful to the body, next I will give facts on the benefits to the body and last I will talk about the safe levels of consumption.

Interestingly enough, the same parts of the body that can be harmed by caffeine can also be benefited by it. While many assume that caffeine harms the heart, caffeine can also promote heart health. According to the Mayo Clinic, “caffeine reduces inflammation that can relieve headaches and certain heart problems”. Caffeine is also known to protect brain cells which can fight off certain diseases. Moderate coffee consumption is also known to reduce the risks of strokes. Finally, Caffeine can help someone feel more energized which then promotes exercise. The more energized you are, the more active you'll be and the healthier body weight you'll have.
Now that we've discussed the pros and cons of caffeine, let's talk about how much is a safe intake. According to the Mayo Clinic, it is safe for an average adult to consume 400 mg per day. That is about four cups of coffee or 10 cans of soda. Additionally, caffeine can be harmful to children in any amount. According to kidshealth.org “Children who ingest large amounts of caffeine can develop long term blood pressure and heart problems”.
