Long ago, in a time where only land animals existed there was a bird named Aves. Unlike, the birds we know of today Aves wasn’t able to fly nor were any other animals. On his expedition he ran into many obstacles including dark forests, tall mountains, and vicious animals. Nothing distracted Aves from his goal, he just took every difficulty one by one until he finally overcame them. After two days he had reached the sacred tree, Malum. He spoke to Malum gently and kindly, “Goddess of all trees, will you do me one favor and give me just one drop of your sweet sap?” The tree awoke, “My sap is only given to the most genuine, brave, and kind souls. Brush one of your feathers upon my bark and we will put you to the test.” Answering Malum’s request, Aves touched a few of his feathers to her, praying he would pass. He waited a few minutes, but nothing happened. “I’m sorry my darling, I’m afraid you didn’t pass. My sap will not drop.” Instantly Aves began to sob. “I have done everything that has been asked of me! I made the trip! I overcame the obstacles! What have I done wrong?” Suddenly just like Aves tears, sap began to poor out of Malum. He was shocked. “Yes! Thank you so much! I have done it! I have finally done

When I try to imagine that dead tiger shark in suspended animation, glorified in a steel box of formaldehyde, I can’t help but see it in motion. I see the walls of its glass cage expand into a murky kelp forest that masks its constant forward motion, just as Terry Tempest Williams mentions in her essay “A Shark in the Mind of One Contemplating Wilderness.” Though Williams addresses a broad range of issues in her work, this essay can be summarized quite easily: in order for us as humans to understand and appreciate something, we have to kill it—or pause it—to do so. “Even in death, I see this shark in motion.” (Williams 570)…
