1. What does it mean to be a part of a JROTC program?
JROTC has a different definition for every cadet, but I will give you mine. To me, JROTC means self-discovery. Through this program, I have learned that I am stronger, smarter, and more motivated than I could have ever imagined. Commanding parades and completing a week-long Parris Island boot camp and receiving the NS1 Distinguished Cadet ribbon has changed me. I came into the program as an unruly, out of shape, unrefined teenager. I am almost done with my sophomore year and I am no longer those things. I am smart and I am strong and I am powerful. Smart is not defined as perfect grades. I have some A-minuses. Strong is not defined as maxing out the Physical Fitness Test. I got a 285 on my last one. Powerful is not defined as being the Battalion Commander. I believe in myself, which influences and inspires others more than any rank would. I have discovered myself through JROTC.

How would you motivate members of the unit in and outside of the drill team?
The Drill Team’s success keeps the team motivated. Our Drill Team practices six days a week from August to May. Because of all the hard work the team puts in throughout the year, success comes. Success does not always mean first place. Success can be the unarmed platoon executing the perfect right face. Success can be doing a suicide toss and catching it. Success can be maneuvering the guide-on with sharpness and confidence. By celebrating the small victories, the long season is worth it.
Non-members of the Drill Team stay motivated through success also. Hearing our principal make announcements about our successes at competitions motivate cadets, along with the principal’s tweets which support our unit. Strangers asking, “Oh, are you from Colts Neck?” when our cadets are in uniform keep the cadets
