In the novel Out of the Easy written by Ruta Sepetys, one can see that multiple themes are developed through different characters, situations, as well as settings. The theme that is most important to the main character, Josie is “decisions shape our destiny.” Through this theme one can see Josie's development as a character, as well as her own protagonist. In the story, Into Thin Air, by Jon Krakauer, the main character, who is Jon himself, makes one of the most tragic ascents of Mount Everest in history. Over the course of the Jon's story about his experience on Mount Everest, Jon starts to really show how much he grows as a person during one of the most difficult situations Jon has been in. But even though Jon grew a lot, he grew more loving than anything else because he started the journey with strangers, and because of their mutual love of mountain climbing, the courage of his team, and the hardships they faced did Jon really grow to love his team. Through the stories of Esperanza, Esteven, and Taylor, America is not seen as a classless society. Esperanza and Esteven came to America with the dream that they will be treated as equally as everyone else in the society, but the reality is that they are often referred to as “illegals”(261).
