Cabeza de Vaca is trekking through the humid green swamplands, and mosquito's are swooping into his nostrils for every breath he takes; he has to keep on going, or he will die. This is one of many challenges Cabeza de Vaca had to face in order to get back to Spanish colonization while he was exploring the land of Texas, and trying to find treasure and colonize. He had been through what many call the impossible, and hadn’t given up. Cabeza de Vaca survived by respecting the local Native American, healing the sick, and utilizing his survival and wilderness skills.
One of the ways Cabeza de Vaca survived is by respecting the Native Americans, even though they were his slave masters. According to the text, Cabeza had learned different Native American languages in order to communicate. “Cabeza learned four Indian languages, including Charrucos, plus sign language.” (Doc B) and “This cure gave us (Cabeza de Vaca included) a very great reputation among them throughout the whole land” (Doc C). The text states, “I inserted the knife point, and with great difficulty, at last I pulled it out.” and “.. this cure gave us a very great reputation among them throughout the whole land.”, (Doc C). In another document, it says “.. and that we cured the sick.”. (Doc D). Cabeza de Vaca is performing surgery on an Indian that was injured before. He had better knowledge of these kinds of things so he knew what to do, and that gave him a good reputation. Also, in Doc D it’s saying that Cabeza de Vaca and his team cured the ones that fell
