Cabeza De Vaca Book Report

One thing that caught my eye was the book on Lourie’s following of the trail of Cabeza De Vaca. I found it intriguing because I thought it to be a lot like the well known Homer books Illiad and the Odyssey. To me, the description of On the Trail of Cabeza De Vaca seemed similar to that of Homer’s books. A man, Cabeza De Vaca, set sail to near Mexico, which was like Odysseus journeying to Troy; but in Cabeza De Vaca’s case he was venturing to the Mexico area in order to colonize, conquer, and possibly find gold, while Odysseus was traveling in order to defeat Troy. Also too, both Odysseus and De Vaca were gone for about ten years. One question I have is did Lourie know that it seemed a bit like the Odyssey? Another would be what is his favorite

Most people believe “El Chupacabra” is a myth while others don't. Although many have claimed that they have seen it, they don’t have proof. It may just be some stray dog, or canine-type creature. One of the pieces of evidence goes something like this "It can change colors at will, has a hairy, reptilian body with spines all along its back and an obsession with blood. El Chupacabra translated into English means "the goat-sucker," because that's exactly what it does.…

Even something as minor as ascending the stairs was meticulously planned to trick her suitors. Odysseus and Penelope's relationship is interesting as well.…

I have a strong connection with Patria because she presents herself as someone with dignity, being the eldest sister in her family. As an older sister, I can relate to her because we both think differently than our younger siblings. In the beginning of her entry, she talks about how she “was coming out, hands first, as if reaching up for something,” (Alvarez,44). Ever since my sister was born, I have always tried to reach out and help my sister through tough situations she has by giving her advice.…

In reviewing the poem Isla, written by Virgil Suarez, I believe that Suarez is speaking about his life and the challenges that they had to endure while in the Caribbean’s. The first image that I see use is Godzilla, which I see it as describing how he and his family may have felt moving from a place that they once called home and then been forced to live in a foreign place. The writer references Godzilla because he wants his readers to see how the mother and child felt being somewhere he did not use to, feeling “unwanted, exiled, how you move from one country to another where nobody you” (Kirszner & Mandell, 2012). I think the writer is trying to express how his family may have felt when they left their country in order to have a better life.…

    La Guera Summary

As for this week’s reading assignments, I was introduced to two pieces of readings: Judith Lorber’s “Night to His Day,” and Cherrie Moraga’s “La Guera.” Having read and thinking about the issues of the readings, I was aware of the process that the society has used to construct gender over the years (in “Night to His Day”) and how mistreatment, like racial discrimination or gender inequality, is involved in the construction of gender (in “La Guera”). Let’s talk about Lorber’s article. As I read, I noticed what the author indicates: “For individuals, gender means sameness,” and “for society, gender means difference;” I believed that it was true. From my perspective, each individual in this society complies with his [or her] group’s expectations…
