Cabarrus High School Case Study

As a teacher in Cabarrus County I am very much aware that his letter will probably be viewed as the rants of a disgruntled parent. I am not disgruntled I am disheartened by the athletic department at Northwest Cabarrus High School. I have been an active supporter of the athletic department for eight years. It was no secret I was disappointed my son was cut from the basketball team his senior year after having played since seventh grade and two years on the varsity team. However I was most disheartened by the way we, meaning my son, myself and his father were treated. In the world of education, we say parent involvement is crucial however at NCHS that is not the case. Last year my son was depressed and his overall attitude had changed. …show more content…
The athletic department should be concerned with the poor athletic performance, the perception in the community, the disappearance of money in the department. Yes, parents are questioning where money that is being raised is going. For years, the topic at our dinner conversation was what teachers or members of the athletic department were having sex at school and what coaches were making inappropriate comments to females. Also, the number of talented athletes that are leaving before they even get into high school, the lack of parent communication in all sports, and the poor reputation that this school now has. Not only have I been a Northwest Cabarrus High parent for eight years and supported football, basketball and track I am also a teacher at Northwest Cabarrus Middle therefore I hear what the students say. The topic of conversation is how to get to Concord, JM, Central, Cox Mill or Kannapolis anywhere other than NCHS. When coaches threaten the players by telling, them they will ruin their reputation if they transfer is completely inappropriate. I hate to see this school’s athletic department be reduced to the joke of the county but that is how it is seen. Again, this letter may be the rants of a disgruntled parent; however, every word is true and people in the community feel the same. If

Thirty years ago, students attending Wahconah Regional High School had a different experience as they went through their normal activities of the year. For example, if a student were to play two sports throughout the course of an academic year, they did not have to pay a sports fee (today that fee is $100). Why is that? The answer is simple. Funding is different because the tax system imposed on the seven surrounding towns.…

National College Athletic Association; it is actually an examination of its potential ramifications. It is noted throughout the article that the Judge’s ruling only represents an incremental advancement for the cause of student-athletes. The author implies that the Judge believes that student-athletes should receive compensation but nevertheless only granted a meager amount of compensation to athletes in this case as an acknowledgement of the fact that full free-market compensation is unpractical in college athletics as presently construed. The incremental nature of the judge’s ruling means that student-athlete compensation is far from a settled…

The argument for inclusion based upon tax payments appears weak at best. Many states apportion funding based on enrollment and the expenses of home school students, who play a sport but are not enrolled, are not covered under state funding. Finally, it is clear that if a parent chooses not to partake in the public education system that parent’s child is not entitled to participate in their high schools sports program because their parent has waived that…

While the O’Bannon v. National Collegiate Athletic Association’s case was appealed, and therefore never implemented, this essay could still be useful. Not only could it be used as a way of understanding the start of a changing NCAA system, but it could also be used as a reference. The potential unintended consequences that compensating athletes could have, outlined in Parlow’s essay, could be used by sports administrators as they look at the possibility of compensating athletes in the future. They could look at the potential unintended consequences and determine solutions that would not result in such…

Through the college search I knew I wanted a rigorous institution that was going to push me to grow as a student and as a person and give me an opportunity to play division 3 football. Jeremy Stephan, a Freshman majoring in Chemistry and on your football team, and I played football together in high school and he knew I also wanted to continue playing football in college and he recommended Macalester. Simultaneously, I was attending multiple football camps where the Macalester coaching staff was recruiting at. I began to build a bond with Coach Davies and he thought I would be a great fit at Macalester. As concerned parents of students, at Legacy Traditional School of Maricopa, this letter is to inform you that our tolerance for the disorganization and lack of discipline that has occurred in Legacy Maricopa is officially depleted. While Legacy School continues to grow, leadership at the Maricopa Campus has failed over the last few years to make good on the promise stated in the school Philosophy and mission statement "Legacy Traditional School mission is to provide motivated students with the opportunity to achieve academic excellence in an accelerated, back-to-basics, safe learning environment taught by caring, knowledgeable and highly effective educators in cooperation with supportive, involved parents." When asked if they are as focused on their degrees and education as they are to football and practicing, they all similarly said yes because although football is their passion in life, their education got them to where they are and that is what will help them once football is over with. Mississippi College has a very firm mission statement for their athletic department. The mission statement is posted as a plague in the locker room and on the wall of each and every coach for Mississippi College. This plague of the mission statement seemed important to me, because it states everything the school and coaches expect of the boys, and girls, on each and every sports team. There are very clear statements made in the mission statement that declare what an athlete-student should be, and without it the very foundation of student-athletes at Mississippi College would be…

There is not a motivation to encourage them to take highly demanding courses, and since they are new in the system, they are unable to complain for something different. In addition, even if they complain, they are excluded from the option of taking a harder class because of the English level they can handle. The argument is unfair for those who excel in mathematical and scientific ability but lack of English proficiency.…

There was no discussion or input from the school principals. Truthfully I don’t know if the school principals could have done anything to defuse this particular topic however if approved the three school principals involved will have to work extremely hard to get the parents of the transferring students to buy into the new schools. Unfortunately I believe the parents will be looking for problems so they have grounds to push for the magnet school to go back as it was. The IB and STEM programs have been very successful in Cabarrus County but with that success I feel we must still continue to expose our students to cultural differences, if not are we really preparing them for…

What is the biggest problem in high school sports and why? One of the biggest problems we have with high school sports currently is coaches who fail to respect the kids and the sport. Ultimately they are ignoring the massive impact they have on athletes’ lives and they lives that surround that sports team. Sadly there are many coaches who do not belong working with children but they some how get the job and seem to never leave it.…
