It is estimated that an additional 15,000 providers will be needed to meet the growing demand for primary care providers, emphasizing the crisis that individuals who that are uninsured, isolated, and medically vulnerable will be in with this impending shortage. Consequently, ARNPs can increase the availability of primary care providers by assisting with a wide range of acute and preventative health care services, which has been associated with lower mortality and a reduction in emergency room visits (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation [RWJF], 2012).
