The purpose of this organization is to serve Latinos and other members of the Long Beach community alike that come from underserved backgrounds in order to help minimize disparities, especially when it comes to health and well-being. As an intern, I have been appointed with a variety of tasks, including completing research data entry, helping with event planning, grant writing, and delivering my own workshop in Spanish on a nutrition-related topic. I will be delivering my workshop mid-November, which will focus on providing the attendees with a brief overview of health conditions that are prominent amongst older adults, providing nutrition-related prevention methods for each condition, and providing resources that will give the attendees information about locations that can help them obtain access to the foods groups I emphasize in order to help them become mindful of their diets as they reach their elderly stage in

For people to make healthier food choices, healthier food options must be made accessible. The minority families of this community who have a lower income have less access to healthier food and beverages as well as less access to outdoor facilities. The people of this community are creatures of habit they will continue to habitually eat poorly and not exercise until there is a concerted effort to break habits and ensure access to affordable options. My goal for improvement is to help create access as well as accessibility for this to happen.…

Public Health Issue and Target Population The Somali Retail Project seeks to reduce the prevalence of diabetes among Somali refugees living in Seattle and King County. Seattle and King County is home to a significant Somali refugee and immigrant population (Balk, 2015). Somalis have a high prevalence of diabetes, prediabetes and obesity compared to non-Somalis (Njeru et al., 2015). Research shows that a growing number of Somali immigrants develop diabetes within the first five years of arrival to the U.S. (Cunningham et al., 2008). Multiple factors may influence Somali refugees’ risk for diabetes, including poor eating habits, acculturation, unfamiliarity with available foods and socioeconomic influences (Rondinelli et al., 2011).…

At the present time, it is evident that humans, specifically living in the Coachella Valley, have problems with their health due to their innutritious diets. This issue has multiple causes that are imperative to adjust in order to help educate the community and prevent any health problems that could save someone's life. The change for this dilemma needs to be acted on urgently because it is serious and timely enough to require a solution. According to Don Nutbeam, in his article “Health Literacy as a Public Health Goal: A Challenge for Contemporary Health Education and Communication Strategies into the 21st Century,” he suggests that health education is the first step to improving one's diet. To elaborate, in order for citizens to change the…

I believe this will be the gate I can walk through to work as a Public Health Educator to serve my community in this field. As long as I can remember, it has been always my hobby to educate people I know about how they can take good care of their health, maintain healthy weight, and eat a healthy diet. Sometimes I try to make a twist in a dessert recipe to decrease its fat content and share it with my friends. As college students, textbooks serve one of the most important jobs in understanding the material that the class is covering. However, sometimes students do not use their textbooks and only focus on the lecture to study. Using only the lectures makes the purchase of a textbook seem pointless and the lack of use of a textbook raises questions about the reasons for not using it. In the social problems class offered here at the University of Oklahoma, the textbook used is Social Problems written by William Kornblum and Joseph Julian. The design of a textbook can often influence the usage of the textbook.…

When looking at public health there is a clear intersection of several discourses. The physical and cultural worlds of Anthropology have a quality of aligning these two topics into a well-designed framework for how humans have shaped their own attitudes on what is “healthy”. While both worlds continually expand in response to how society does these several opinions on what is healthy begin to be developed into a how-to guide. I have interviewed a person whose main goal is to bridge this gap so that an all-inclusive guide to ideal health that be obtained through obtaining knowledge through research and then sharing it to the everyday man. Dr. Akua Woolbright, having wished to be called Dr. Akua, confesses that her job goes by many titles; she is a Nutritionist and Nutrition Program Director at…

Introduction The overall aim of this assignment is to investigate and discuss how my ideal school can develop well rounded, motivated, lifelong learners who are prepared for life in a democratic society within the international world and able to succeed in the challenges that it presents. I will be focusing on the whole school with some links into the classroom due to limitation of size in this assignment. Author and Emeritus Professor of Philosophy of Education, John White (2006) talks about the National Curriculum of England and notes that- ‘(it) aims to help every young person to live a fulfilling life and to help others do so…… and each person is free to make his or her own decisions.’ (p. 6) White (2006) goes on to say that teachers…

Though as we grow older, we begin to notice that it is a very large factor in raising successful children. A successful classroom consists of many factors, but the most important, is that teachers understand the democratic values of their students, conveying guidance and structure that support values of democracy. In the real world, democracy is what brings Americans together and makes us strong and unified. The classroom is no different, implementing different democratic values within the classroom, can help make a class room productive.…
