Jazz History Concert Report II For my final concert writing critique, I decided to attend the live Ball State Student Jazz Combos on Tuesday, November 8; this event took place in Choral Hall inside of the university’s Music Instruction Building. The wooden hall was smaller than I thought it would have been, but it gave the concert setting a more intimate feel. There were three groups presenting that day, each under a different director. Because each group did not have a specific name, I had to label them based on the order in which they performed.…

Very few famous performers nowadays can integrate showmanship with their music. In the 70’s a musical group by the name of Parliament took the music world by storm with their out of this world appearance and their own rendition of Funk music. Parliament was one of the key pieces in the development of funk music and modern music as well. They created what we know as P-Funk today that was a key element of the foundation of Hip-Hop. For my concert report I analyzed Parliament’s 1976…

I was not looking forward to seeing URINETOWN THE MUSICAL because I was tired from working all day and I really thought it was going to be a boring musical to watch. I expected that the musical would be set in the past around 1950s and it would be confusing for the audience to relate to. When I walked into the Philip Lynch Theatre I was surprised that the theatre was a thrust stage with two floors of seating. The main floor seats were all filled but the balcony seating was empty. The first thing that you noticed when you walked into the lobby was a wall that had a quote that covered the entire wall.…

Every day, I try to listen to a new piece of music. Whether it be a string group, unaccompanied choir, or even a percussion consort, I believe that by doing this, so much can be learned from just listening. About the mid-month of July, I came across this piece of music. I thought it was extremely fun and quirky at the same time! I had continued to listen to it, read some background information on the piece, and do a small amount of study on the work.…

This Stony Brook University performance was the first time I was exposed to any performance, so throughout the concert, there were many things that stuck out to me. The first thing that stuck out to me was the dress code. Upon arrival, I was surprised by dozens in very formal outfits. Once I was in the auditorium I did notice that there were indeed no phones, people talking or people eating. I saw the pride and excitement in some of the families faces as the performance began.…

Holidays, in addition to being a festive time for celebrating with friends and family, is also a time to enjoy classic fine arts together. A stable every Christmas season is the Nutcracker, which the literature is republished in multiple forms including play, dance, and orchestra concerts. This season I had the pleasure of being a audience of The Nutcracker presented at the McCaw Hall. The show was phenomenal, and included moments of cheerfulness and happiness, but during others moments of grave danger and suspense. The performers applied contrasting bodily techniques and motions to express different emotions, and wrapped up the scene with appropriate props and decors that awed the audience ever time the stage came to light.…
