Written Commentary on the film ‘CROSS’

The filming ‘CROSS’ basically started on the thoughts of common incidents that might happen between teenage girls in high school. The biggest issue was friendship whilst the second one was defining self-identity. The initial idea of ‘CROSS’ focused highly on self-identity, and it was thinned, accompanying with theme of friendship. Thus the motivation of Abigail Clark ‘cross-dressing’ was simplified to one word of ‘I like it’, while the original had a chunk of description.

First of all, the location and time was incontrollable and was limited. For example, I could not use the location farther away from GEC. I had two outdoor scenes, and it depended on the weather. I seeked for day neither raining nor snowing to shoot. I tried to go outside when it was less windy that the sound would be catchable. The exterior scenes, or even interior scenes that windows appear should be token at daytime. In addition, casting of the whole classroom, filled up with students including the teacher, was very hard (it was almost impossible to match all of their time). I suggested the solution as replacing the scene with only main actors looking at the bulletin board of certificates and the posters. The costumes of actors were limited too. While films such as “mean girls” or “high school musical” is based on American high school, which allows free outfits, Branksome students wear uniform. Since outfits in the school scenes were united, a chance of showing each character’s distinct personality or individuality has disappeared. Differing from the initial plans, the narration took place in resolution of story instead of actions. Showing short cuts of events after Abigail and Alex fighting, Abigail narrates what happened after. This not only cuts off time-consuming scenes, but it also shows how the days passed vastly and she was busy.
In ‘CROSS’, the lighting wasn’t the biggest factor depending the mood of the whole film. There was no special effect constructed by usage of lightings. Since almost all of the scenes were taken indoors, the fluorescent lighting led faces of actors well, which I intended in order to show the facial expression while having a conversation. I only used extra lighting when it was too dark that camera could not show the boundaries and outlines of actor’s
