A: Family and Community Involvement and Outreach - Principals design and/or utilize structures and processes which result in family and community engagement, support and ownership for the school.
Intentionally designed structures and process that result in family and community engagement in the school will result in greater support and ownership of the school. Creating a welcoming atmosphere to the school will allow parents and community members to feel comfortable when entering the school building. Building accountability committees, parent council, and district accountability committees offer an excellent venue for families and community members to become in the school process. Often times, it is the same handful of parents who are involved in all of these things. To encourage a wider representation of stakeholders, the principal must communicate with the community through a variety of venues and promote school involvement throughout the school year. One way that I have supported a greater family and community involvement in student learning initiatives is through participation in parent nights at both Air Academy High School and Eagleview Middle School that focus on the Bring Your Own Device initiative. In addition during these meetings, we asked parents and community members how they preferred to receive their news. Most participants said that they use facebook as a means for communication most often.
