Characteristics Of Vehicle To Grid

Great Essays
Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) is one power technology of those attractive new energy storage technologies. It aggregated those vehicles with battery (Hybrid electric vehicles, battery electric vehicles, and plug- in hybrid electric vehicles) into the grid as a distributed resource of energy load, storage and generation device. It is not only adding the ability to deliver power from vehicle to the grid, but also can apply the power flow (Lund & Kempton, 2008). V2G technology provides potential solutions to energy storage and stabilization. It can benefit in peak load shifting, smoothing variable generation from renewable energy, and providing distributed energy storage capacity (Peterson et al., 2010)..
Electric vehicles have two fundamental characteristics: one is they are vehicles and other is they have batteries on board to receive, output and store electricity. Base on the physical and natural characteristics, electric vehicle and the grid can have a performed integration at the distribution voltage level. Electric vehicle which has battery can be plugged into the grid to charge up the battery and get the energy it needs. When the electric vehicle fleet reaches a certain magnitude, it will create a new load demand to the conventional electricity system.

They can be used for commuting, long trips, or any travel purposes. The average round-trip commuting distance in the US is about 32 miles, and the average commuting time is about 52 min. Indeed, about 60% of the commuters in the US drive a distance under 50 miles (Sanna, 2005). Thereby, those electric vehicles used for commuting are idle for 22 hours a day on average. It’s obviously that there is only a part of energy consumed by the commute and still some in the battery. Consequently, each electric vehicle becomes a potential source of both storage capacity and energy that the grid can control either as load or

Due to technology constraints, even a top EV model, such as the Tesla Model S, can only run for 215 miles until its batteries are depleted. Meanwhile, an average HEV like the Prius can be driven for 500 miles before its batteries and fuel tank are emptied (EPA's MPG Ratings). This, coupled with the lack of public charging station, makes EVs unsuitable for long range transport. However, recent study shows that the average travel distance in the US is just 50 miles per day, as shown in figure 3 (Haaren). This distance can be covered by most EVs, including the lowest priced models such as the Nissan Leaf (EPA's MPG…

Owning a Tesla car has its benefits, yet there are few drawbacks that need to be addressed, to ensure this vehicle is widely applicable to the entire society. One of the benefits of owning an electrical vehicle, is no emissions are produces as the vehicle is powered and operated through electrical energy only. This means it requires no sort of fossil-fuels or biofuels, required to actively operate this vehicle. This is essential in current society, as the global warming due to excess production of greenhouse gases, is impacting the entire globe. Through the introduction of green vehicles that produce little to none greenhouse, these automobiles can effectively curb the threat of climate change due to greenhouse gases.…

So when the vehicle is running on the electric motor its power consumes no fuel and that is the reason why hybrids have better fuel economy then their gas only counterparts because of regenerative braking technology. In regular cars they have a component called the alternator. The alternators mission is to charge the battery and supply extra power to other accessories to your car like the radio. To explain how it works is the alternator is made up of a stator, rotor and diode. As the v-belt spins; the pulley on the alternator the rotor inside spins fast.…

These batteries are usually composed of nickel- iron, nickel-zinc, zinc-chloride, and lead acid. One challenge that designers face is in the design of the electric car and its weight. The battery and electric propulsion system consist of 40% of the weight of the car, whereas in a gas-powered vehicle, the engine, coolant system, and other exclusive powering devices are only about 25% of weight of the car. The electric car has two sources of power, one electric and the other an internal combustion engine. The electrical power is consumed for stop-and-start driving at low speeds, whereas the gasoline propulsion is mainly used for highway speeds and mileage.…

In electric vehicles, about 72% of the energy in the batteries is used to move the car, which is about 54% more than in a gasoline car (Sadek). When the efficiency in producing the gasoline and electricity is taken into account, electric loses a portion of its lead, becoming only about 12% more efficient than gasoline (Sadek). However, this problem can and will be solved eventually, as electricity production increases in efficiency, along with more and more environmentally…
