COSMOSS Personal Statement

Improved Essays
In my high school experience, I have been blessed with many great teachers and advisors who have helped me develop academically. However, I learned at COSMOS, a science summer program at UC Davis, that learning goes beyond lectures in a classroom. At Davis, I experienced a college learning environment vastly different from high school. Every lecture day, I had a lab after lecture that applied concepts to real life. In the corresponding labs for Organic Chemistry, for instance, I made biofuel from newspaper and synthesized Benzodiazepine to kill krill. Although I would not like to kill krill for a living, the applicability of chemistry to the modern world through drug discovery and biofuel further incited my interest in chemistry. I yearned …show more content…
The program served as a spark that piqued my interest in the sciences, but more importantly introduced me to the immense power science has to alter the progression of human life. I want to be part of that progression; I want to write exciting lab reports on scientific breakthroughs that directly help people. Much like COSMOS, established undergraduate research allows me to apply concepts I learn in class to the real world. Such research opportunities greatly enhance my interest in and my knowledge of curricular ideas, which I believe are essential to my future success. Johns Hopkins has a well established undergraduate research emphasis, as 70 percent of undergraduates participate in it. The sheer number of undergraduates at Johns Hopkins that pursue research emphasizes your institution’s willingness to help future undergraduates like me gain deeper understanding of concepts while also instilling a sense of practicality in learning material. It is not only the opportunity to learn from research that appeals to me, but also how meaningful the research is. A senior undergraduate student can conduct research that provides groundbreaking therapy to cure neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's Disease, as Preston Ge ’17 has done, which has direct impact on thousands of lives. Research that helps people at this scale attests to not only how plentiful your opportunities are,

The many research opportunities at the Chicago Medical School at RFUMS provide opportunities for students to engage in research under the mentorship of brilliant senior scientists, and for a student like myself to pursue my interests and explore other fascinating areas of research. I also admire RFUMS’s rich history of medical service, from both medical students and physicians, to surrounding Mexican-American communities. RFUMS’s dedication to interprofessional collaboration, teamwork and service has and will lead to a legacy of excellence and I would be honored for the opportunity to learn and grow as an aspiring physician-scientist in this environment. I am a chemistry major graduating from the College of Charleston in May. My undergraduate education has trained me to operate and interpret various chemical analysis instruments (UV-Vis spectrometer, gas chromatography, NMR, FTIR) effectively. Subsequently, the subjects I studied (calculus 1-3, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, instrumental chemistry) makes me conversant in the molecular interactions that are fundamental to brewing science. Combining my training for chemistry with my affinity for home-brewing, I interned at Holy City Brewing in Charleston and LauderAle Brewing in Florida. Both were excellent introductions to the brewing industry where I learned all about brewing, cellaring,…

It’s a common narrative that teenagers are pressured into careers based upon the beliefs of their parents and/or upbringing. I feel lucky to have escaped such a life and discover that a childhood hobby could transform into a flourishing career. I feel blessed to work towards a career that I love because having the strength to use words in ways that captivate, communicate, and encourage are a few of the many reasons why writing is extremely essential in everyday life. It was a meeting with an advisor at Wayne State that transformed my life forever. He said, “You don’t have to major in Chemistry to attend medical school.…

For me, while classroom lectures remain incredibly enjoyable, the most genuine excitement about learning appears when I apply my knowledge to assist with a real-world problem. I most recently experienced this during my internship in a Biomedical Engineering lab at the University of Delaware, where I developed an accurate automatic confluent cell quantification program. I eagerly approached the problem, hoping that I could accomplish the task that the lab group entrusted to me. During the first week, I devoured hundreds of pages describing various MATLAB techniques and voraciously watched an abundance of videos, testing methods ranging from watershed transforms to edge detection. Every failed trial only served as an inspiration to push myself…

Margaret was easily the coolest person I’d ever met, and I’d only known her for about ten minutes. She was a NASA intern at the Ames facility, and was fielding all my questions about her field, nanotechnology. As part of the Idaho Science and Aerospace Scholars (ISAS) program, me and forty-two other rising high school seniors had completed a semester-long online class during the school year, and were now participating in a week-long Summer Academy. Talking with scientists, engineers, and interns about everything from prosthetics to Reynold’s number made me realize something very powerful. While at Rutgers I have had the opportunity to expand my knowledge on living systems from the level of a single molecule to an entire organism. I have been able to do this both in the classroom and while shadowing a physician. While these two types of learning are very different, they both are vital aspects of having a holistic education in the biological sciences. Through my major in Cell Biology and Neuroscience, I have also been able to build on my biology foundation by delving more deeply into neuroscience, the facet of the life sciences that most interests me. I also have had hands-on experience working at the cellular level in my laboratory and have developed a comfort with the material allowing me to explain it to others.…

I stepped into the AP biology classroom for the second time that day. It was just after school had ended around 4 in the afternoon, and my classmates and I had filed back into the room to start the task of completing the first lab of the year. We had all participated in the regional science fair, so we were all reasonably acquainted with the scientific method, making this lab setting something of relative normality to us. Despite this prior exposure to a lab type setting, this was different. This difference can be contributed mostly to the AP Biology teacher, Mr. Smith.…
