The study included 37 patients and 25 healthy subjects. The patients displayed significantly lower levels of acetone, valine and lysine, and significantly higher levels of lactate, acetate, propionate, serine, proline and tyrosine. Samples of saliva were obtained shortly before the EBC sampling to detect possible salivary contaminations. By comparing the spectra from EBC and saliva in the same subject, they excluded any significant salivary contamination of EBC.
