We are in an age of prime technological growth containing a myriad of divergent innovations. When I look at the world around me, all I see is science and engineering. Technology is the foundation for which we can grow and advance as a society, and I strive to be a part of that progress; I strive, for this reason, to be an engineer. I am plaid in this way, and therefore, there is something about Carnegie Mellon University that distinctively calls out to me.
The amount of emphasis that is put on research in the Engineering and Computer Science Colleges is what sparked my interest in CMU. I truly value a solid research experience, as it allows for me to learn, understand, and improve my skills in the field of engineering. I believe being plaid

From both the research and the award, I decided that Rensselaer met my standards when it came to academic reputation and student involvement. I became interested in Rensselaer because of its rigorous academics. As I look into Rensselaer, what stood out was its 5 schools. In a way it makes Rensselaer unique for its interdisciplinary curriculum. Specifically, I was attracted to the School of Engineering, which focused on a solid foundation to build off with liberal arts background.…

During March 2-4, I attended the OR-AMP/PNW-LSAMP Conference at Oregon State University. This conference works to motivate and encourage minority participation in the STEM fields. Amas Aduviri, the Director of SSS/CAMP at Oregon State University, gave a keynote about his life and the factors that have brought him where he is today. Aduviri was born in Bolivia with zero contact and communication from the advance world full of technology we live in today. He lived in the depths of the forests in Bolivia where technology or automobiles were only a mere concept of an idea in his head.…

I hope to gain an exemplary foundational career experience from the EKU REU program. I was initially attracted to this program because the theme of disturbance ecology complements my own research interests in anthropogenic influence and conservation biology. Through individual research this summer and the research of others, I hope to learn more about the impact of human activity on landscapes, how to approach restoration, and what sustainable and effective scientific study looks like. I am excited to live in Kentucky and learn about its ecology and sociology, having never been to the area before. In addition, I hope to gain practical field and laboratory research skills at Lilley Cornett Woods old-growth forest ecosystem and Maywoods Environmental…

Howard University guarantees their students a very well-rounded education, while still letting them dive into the beauty of their majors. As a Howard student, I will be able to reach my full potential intellectually and socially and strive for success in my intended field of study, Political Science. I’ve been interested in political science for a long time and what intrigued me the most was that I would be learning more about other countries and focusing on their cultures, belief systems, and stances on various international issues and crises. As well as an in-depth look at domestic politics and this country’s government, which goes perfectly with Howard’s convenient location in Washington, D.C. the home of Capitol Hill, The White House, and 177 foreign embassies.…

My interest towards attending Mercer University’s Physician Assistant is largely due to the emphasis the University puts on service to humankind through service learning and integrating volunteering. Being a founding institution that ingrains service to humanity entirely into its culture and academics, there is no doubt that Mercer would provide me with an exceptional opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills of a Physician Assistant providing whole person care to members of the community. Having worked as an Emergency Medical Technician in an underserved community, Kewaunee, Wisconsin, for some time now, I thoroughly understand how important providing effective care to those in need really is. During my experience I witnessed the appalling living conditions that many patients were surrounded by and how difficult accessing healthcare service was for them, thus enforcing medical illnesses to be even more likely to occur among them. I have personally observed how appreciative and grateful many of the patients and the families of the patients were when…

In his book, Michael Tietelbaum criticizes the STEM program, citing the shortages of the program and implications of the policy on education and the workforce. His book excellently brings out a wealth of data and information, revealing the history of booms and bust in science and engineering employment. It as well outlines the shortages of STEM, as fault tool for lobbying for high skills and used to curb immigration. Even though the book presents great ideas in relation to challenges of investing in scientific research, it has its fair share of weaknesses. The book largely dwells on the widespread shortages and declining of United States engineers and scientists.…

The question is posed, “Why are you here?” I understand clearly why this is a question this university asks every student who comes through its doors. I know they ask this because it is unclear in our society, why we need a college education. Many sources say that college degrees are useless and I have to agree with them. In 2005, three influential reports entitled Innovate America, Tapping America’s Potential, and Rising Above the Gathering Storm were released within a five month period to the public. These articles argue that the education system at the time was leading to a decline in the quality of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) related jobs. These jobs are widely believed to be the future of the United States of America, and the driving force of innovation worldwide. Many important figures, as well as the U.S. government, chose to motivate current and future generations to go into STEM fields. Taking a look at the research, the authors of these reports address the following concerns: the supply and demand of STEM jobs leading…
