Midterms are approaching and I am pulling my hair out due to the sleepless nights and long hours of studying for midterms. There are some students are planning activities for Halloween while I on the other hand am preparing my study guide for my Microeconomic midterm. The closest to a break I would have from school would be Thanksgiving break, and during the break I would return home and begin working for my family. Being a Latina is more than just a label it is my everyday experience. It is what has empowered me to become the first in my family to graduate both high school and college in the United States. I have experienced what it’s like to be afraid of going outside to an unsafe neighborhood, living with the fear of losing my parents because of their immigration status, growing up without any health insurance and debating at a young age whether I was sick enough to be seen by a doctor. My life experiences and community have driven and inspired me to become a physician. And as an underrepresented future medical professional that grew up in an underserved inner city area I can only envision myself years from now in a rural or urban, inner city area committed to working and serving in minority communities and underserved and…

Cultivating a non-competitive learning environment for students distinguishes singlehandedly the Red Rocks Community College Masters in Physician Studies Program from other institutions. Resonating within me are Professor Dobbs' remarks about the program's goal of promoting camaraderie and collaboration among students instead of the conventional competition and egotistical behaviors characterizing rigorous graduate medical programs. I have a genuine desire of serving others and fully acknowledge that this is not an end goal but a lifetime of being of service and building upon each other, perfecting the many unique talents that we are endowed with. Aspiring to become a compassionate and competent physician assistant working in a team-based practice…

Another experience needed before medical school is the lucrative testing of interaction with people, which is evaluated in the medical school application interviews. A doctor is not solely based on intellectual abilities; another major trait is the ability to compassionately interact with people. Thus, the interviewing process tests that ability, and if that aspect is favorably noticed the student is most likely a promising candidate. How a good candidate is formed is contributed to the lessons the students learn through the extensive pre-medical…
