CLSK Class Analysis

Response 1 The knowledge that we learn in the CLSK classes are actually quite simple and well-known. However, I definitely grow up after this class because it offers me a much further understanding on how to learn well and how to be a good person.
The most general and influential thing that I learn from the class is that having a growth mindset is so important, especially in the intense learning environment in Rose. I am always trying to avoid fix mindset that makes people inactive and not responsible for themselves. Instead, fix mindset is like: “The courses are challenging but it is incredibly rewarding when you master something that has been difficult for you in the past.”(Chapter 5 Fixed vs. Growth Mindsets https://moodle.rose-hulman.edu/mod/book/view.php?id=746303).

I used to sleep less than 6 hours per day and it did make me feel extremely tired when I am learning. The book emphasizes how harmful it is to our study efficiency when we are sleep-deprived(Chapter 2, The New Science of Learning). I tried to do homework earlier and not pushing off tasks to late night. Eventually, I could guarantee 7 hours of sleeping every day, so that I rarely fall asleep in classes. Except from sleeping time, there is one interesting point that studying before going to bed is good for memorization! This is also applicable to my life.
Finally, one helpful tips that I learn from Max Morgan’s video from the 9th week talking about time management is that we should do works individually first, and when we get stuck for a period of time, don’t hesitate to ask for help. I got stuck when I am doing homework regularly. I attempted to stare at it and fix it by thinking again and again, but it turns out that it isn’t effective. So when I am confused and don’t know what to do, I choose to ask professor, search on the internet, or ask classmates. This tip from him helps me a lot in terms of not wasting time thinking

My personal experience with sleep deprivation is very similar to the teenagers Bruni describes in his article. I have experienced the detrimental effects of getting less sleep, as I have gotten older. When I am at school after getting 6 or 7 hours of sleep, I find staying focused, doing work, and taking tests are much more difficult. This becomes very stressful for myself and fellow peers who suffer from the same absence of sleep. I especially agree with Bruni’s thoughts on the result of anxiety and panic.…

This course has helped my this semester in many ways, such as preparing me for career fair and reminding me to stay organized. The book is also very helpful because it talks about real life examples and is relatable. For career fair, it was nice to have an edited resume and to have a guide for our elevator speeches. The worksheets that show us how we use our time are nice because you can really see how much time you waste. I believe that this class keeps our hall a little closer, and helps us get to know each other better.…

All students would like extra time to study, including me. If I sleep later at night, I can have more time to study for an upcoming test. As I am in sixth grade, I have a lot of quizzes and tests from every teacher. The reason why I want to study at nighttime is that I have no time in the morning or after school. For example, I am very busy with club meetings, dinner, and band practice.…

Working late hours or having to stay up to late hours of the night can result in a lack of sleep when your alarm for your eight o’clock begins to ring. A lack of sleep can result in poor performance in school and at your job. As a result, your grades could plummet because you fell asleep while studying. Also, you may begin to fall asleep during class or while working because you’re completely drained from a long work shift and staying up until three o’clock writing an essay. One of my high school teacher said one thing over and over to the senior class but not many of my classmates caught on until we got to college. She said “You do best what you do most”, she repeated that to us every chance she got and she still does today. I learned by being in this course that I have to apply that phrase into my everyday life because is going to be very beneficial for me now and in the future. Out of all the study habits that I learned in this course so far the ones that have hit me the most are the following time management, and finding a place without distraction. When I first began this class I thought that this would be just another introductory class that is required to orient you to the expectations of the particular college. Now, after completing this class, I know that this is not the case. Personal Dimensions of Learning has been a great help, not only to my school work, but also in my daily life. Before taking this class, I thought that learning, and completing daily tasks, were mostly memorizing the order of the way things are supposed to be done and just completing the task. I never liked this strategy, but it always seemed to be the most convenient way to get things done at school, home, and work.…
