The first standard I have chosen is providing effective, equitable, understandable and respectful quality care and services that are responsive to diverse cultural health beliefs and practices, preferred languages, health literacy and other communication needs. To me, this standard is defined as providing equal and respectful care to all patients, regardless of their cultural background. Depending on where you work, this information may be available in a standard operations manual, on the hospital’s intranet, or from hospital administration. If necessary, ask your supervisors about how the standards are applied.
After summarizing standards and describing how they are applied at your place of employment, write at least one recommendation on how the application of the standards could be modified to improve care. The first standard related to CLAS that I covered is currently addressed within my workplace. Cultural beliefs and standards are a priority within the current network I work at. In fact, cultural understanding and implementation is a top priority given that the current state of societal growth is focused on minority demographics. For instance, a patient who may not approve of a male caregiver for themselves or a loved one and prefers a female nurse. This is addressed from the time of admission to the time of discharge and all facets in between. My place of employment, Kettering Health Network (KHN) employees must adhere to the highest standards of ethical conduct which in turn reflects the Network’s mission, values, and culture (Network Operations Council, …show more content…
This precedes us as becoming more adept and skillful professionals and all around professionally tactful. The CLAS standards was developed to improve culturally competent systems of care (Weech-Maldonado et al., 2012). By adhering to these guidelines and standards, it improves overall health outcomes as well as reflecting upon an institutions credibility to provide a wide array of care to people regardless of beliefs and cultural backgrounds. This in turn also improves aspects such as patient satisfaction scores and over all employee
