My initial predictions and understanding of learning styles and problem-based learning (PBL) have greatly changed after taking the Clinical Integration of Basic Science (CIBS) course. Different from the traditional classroom or discussion sections in an undergraduate environment, this course went beyond just reading a problem beforehand and sharing your opinion amongst peers during section. In CIBS, students learn and gain skills by working for a long period of time to investigate and interactively respond to an open-ended realistic problem. With no right or wrong answers, we are able to identify the facts, generate ideas, and list strategies in integrating basic science knowledge and evaluating a clinical case. We put these ideas into a learning need to address what we need to know, research them, and proceed to find a solution to these real world problems. …show more content…
From working with other classmates, we are able to identify symptoms and signs that are associated with diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, glaucoma, or neuropathy. Rather than learning it through slides or through classroom lecture, discussing the problem at hand and research ideas made it much easier to learn. I am better able to piece together information by reading a list of facts about a patient and know that this patient may or may not have a certain condition. Overall, the impact of this PBL process has improved on my critical thinking ability and my own personal approach of receiving and processing information. I am better able to self-evaluate what methods to use and adopt to help me be successful not only in optometry school, but also when I’m practicing as a Doctor of

During nursing school, pediatrics and med-surg were my two of my most favorite classes. Not only was I interested in the material that was being taught, I was able to store that information in my long term memory. Being able to understand the process and connect the dots helped me to do well in both of those classes. I used that knowledge during my pediatric rotations at Cook Children’s and was able to determine why the patients experienced certain symptoms and what methods of treatment they need.…

To reflect appropriately upon the journal, this reflection has been structured into the different elements studied and cited within my discussion and reflective journal entries. These elements are an assessment, the biopsychosocial and therapeutic approaches, and work with families. Even though assessment is quoted in a range of literature, the nature of SEBD means that there is no standardised or definitive test. Behaviour rating scales and procedures for observing and evaluating behaviour are used within my setting, but SEBD is a broad set of needs, and, therefore, diagnostic assessments should always be viewed with caution. As Ellis and Todd (2009) identify, there may be little that pupils with SEBD have in common.…

Throughout high school, I have been involved in many activities. I started off with the STEM academy in my high school. In the STEM academy, we held special events that teach people, especially kids, about new experiments and science-related careers. I helped out the STEM academy by explaining people about the experiments, the purpose behind the experiments and cleaned or organized lab equipment. I was a part of the STEM academy for approximately three years in high school and I really enjoyed it because I knew I could make a difference in my community.…

Being presented with evidence based articles such as the ones provided by Mr. Jones, influences my teaching by changing my initial patient evaluation process. With this information in hand there are certain characteristics about Mr. Jones that I immediately know about him, such as his level of education and his self-efficacy. These initial pieces of information influence how the session will unfold. The level and complexity at which the conversation and material are delivered are impacted by his educational abilities and interest in his health outcomes. It is important to acknowledge Mr. Jones’ information as being important, whether he is information literate or not, recognizing his efforts for self-advocating and to self-manage is significant.…

I’ve been addicted to learning from the start. While all aspects of learning are in some way beneficial, the connection between health science and me has been engraved in my heart. By being in high school, I felt I was limited in the opportunities to dwell in health care. However, I’ve proved my suspicions wrong by delegating myself to creative ways in outreaching to the medical path. I’ve attended medical seminars, shadowed, volunteered, researched and challenged myself to understand people better in ways like attending cultural events that could potentially help me in the future to become a competent healthcare provider.…

“Learn for the sake of knowledge and understanding, rather than for the sake of impressing people or taking a test,” was a powerful quote from Dr Benjamin Carson that I take to heart. I came across this excerpt in 2012, nevertheless the passion for in-depth learning has been the motivating force for me in studying medicine since I began my journey a medical student in 2003. During those years of study, I found physiology and pathophysiology fascinates me the most among other subjects in medicine. I strongly believe those two subjects are the cornerstone of medicine.…
