CHEM1A Reflective Essay

Improved Essays
During the Winter Quarter of 2018, I enrolled in CHEM1A at De Anza Community College to deepen my understanding of chemistry. Going into the class, I expected it to be similar to a high school class. However, I quickly discovered that it was quite different--it was literally and figuratively in a class of its own. There were a lot more advanced concepts taught in my CHEM1A course. At first, I was at a loss on how to study and adequately prepare for the class, given the volume of material and many details involved. During the first two weeks, I found it extremely difficult to self-study. I was overwhelmed by the amount of information and the workload, resulting in me being flustered about what to focus on. After struggling on the first exam

Actually, I am still in the most challenging academic course I have taken to date, AP United States History (APUSH). APUSH has been difficult for me due to the fact that I had very little knowledge of US history preceding my enrollment in the class. Furthermore, prior to this class I had never really had to study extensively to maintain high marks. APUSH has been different. Having little knowledge of this material, I have had to spend much more time studying.…

For this project, I interviewed Kelsey Shoff, a junior who is my lab partner for microbiology. After chatting for a bit, I began asking her questions and it turns out we have similar interest when it comes to what kind of study we like to do. The first question I asked her was about what kind of field work she is pursing at Sage and if she had any doubts or changes along the way. Her response is similar to what mine was when I first started my college search-…

I’ve always loved the sound of rain. Its soft patter against my window releases me from the stresses of college applications, if only for a moment. Then, as quickly as it came, the rain stops its descent upon my window and retreats; growing up in Central Florida, I have been well accustomed to erratic weather patterns such as the rain coming and going in a moment’s notice. Florida’s weather has taught me a valuable lesson over the years: life can be as unpredictable as the weather.…

Throughout high school, I have been involved in many activities. I started off with the STEM academy in my high school. In the STEM academy, we held special events that teach people, especially kids, about new experiments and science-related careers. I helped out the STEM academy by explaining people about the experiments, the purpose behind the experiments and cleaned or organized lab equipment. I was a part of the STEM academy for approximately three years in high school and I really enjoyed it because I knew I could make a difference in my community.…

My grades this past year were and are not indicative of who I am as a student, or as a person in general. My junior year of high school, I decided to do PSEO, thinking it was an easy way to get credits for both high school and college. I did not realize the struggle I was going to have just trying to be accountable for myself during my senior year. My daily schedule consisted of work, soccer, managing the high school boy’s hockey team, volunteer work, spending time with my high school friends and taking college courses. I took the most challenging classes through Anoka-Ramsey Community College, thinking that like high school these would be the best for me.…

As a Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major, English courses have always been viewed as inferior and subpar to STEM courses. Throughout the course, much of what was studied and the concepts that were introduced surprisingly fell in line with those of a scientist. Although science does involve quantitative analysis and calculations, it must all be translated into a dissertation explaining qualitative details. As the Winter quarter comes to a close, I have taken the time to reflect upon the English language and the uses it has in my future endeavors. The purpose of this essay is to review key UWP 1 concepts, learning outcomes, and their effects on my English education and personal growth.…

Final Essay: How Topics In This Course Relate to the “Working” World The first day of this course was a memorable one. I remember walking into class and sitting next to someone who I had not seen for a couple of semesters, and we were chatting about what we thought this course was going to be like. After the professor opened the class, he made it clear that this was not an ordinary class, taught in the time-weathered classic method of notes, lecture and paper exam course instruction. Now, the class was structured to teach facts and equations in the book, but went beyond that, using supplements like in-class examples, random questions and the powerpoints constructed by peers.…

However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…
