This semester, I enrolled in Early Childhood Education 350 (ECE) at Consumes River College, which transfers over to Sacramento State as Child Development 35F. ECE 350 is a course that incorporates lecture and fielded experience at a school site. I was a student volunteer at John Reith Elementary school for an AM and PM kindergarten class. Ms. Moua is the morning instructor, and this is her first year at John Reith and Ms. Din is the afternoon instructor and is a veteran at John Reith. John Reith is a titled one school, meaning the majority of the students receive free or reduced lunch. The school is gated and the only way to enter is through the office, which protects the staff and students from any intruders.…
In the article, “Revamping Community Colleges to Improve Graduation Rates,” Alina Tugend writes about the college student dropout rate and the effects getting in the way of a rising number of graduates. Tugend is correct in saying that community colleges should restore their system to improve graduation numbers. Some community colleges are already improving their system by lowering cost of attendance, requiring less remedial classes, and offering more personal advice to students. Some community colleges are beginning to lower their cost of attendance to improve the number of college graduates. According to the American Association of Community Colleges, “With the average annual tuition of $3,430, community colleges are about one-third the cost of in-state tuition at a public four-year university” (Tugend).…
As a first generation undocumented college student there is great privilege and pride in attending the University of California, Santa Barbara. However with that there is also many obstacles and struggles that I have faced in order to survive and thrive in this institution, one of them is my need for financial aid. Coming from a low-income, single mother household I do not rely on my mother for financial support because I already know she struggles to feed my siblings and pay their bills. As a result I am sending my mother money on a monthly basis in order for her to complete rent for the month and afford groceries. Due to the fact that I am constantly sending my mother and household money in order to contribute to their survival, I have been working two part-time jobs while still being a full-time student in order to make my needs to be met as well.…

Short Term 12 was a very interesting movie. It had hints of being realistic, but with aspects where you knew it was a movie. It’s about a group of workers who work in a foster care residential facility setting. The main character, Grace, deals with her own personal struggles while she supervises the children at the facility. I have a short bit of experience at a facility like Short Term 12 in some aspects; I can see where parts of the movie are realistic and where are some are an exaggeration because it is a movie.…
Growing up in a working class home, I quickly gained the skills of an environmentalist, entrepreneur, and civics leader. I can still recall the smell of the flowering fruit trees of the summer months in sunny South Florid and how every year I would gather the abundance of extra fruit in our backyard and distribute them to our extended family, friends, and neighbors. In our modest home, nothing was ever thrown away, and items would be recycled many times. At the age of nine I was serving hot coffee and small pastries at the walk-up window of the small Cuban café my parents owned. As the United States prepared to celebrate its bicentennial, in the afternoons with a small booklet in hand, I drilled my mother test questions to prepare her for the…
I have not, Eric. Are we still have any issues, and unable to resolve? If not, I really don't want go through any petitioning process, unless we really have to. If anything, it won't have impact anything for our current class. If it is for future improvement, we have the opportunity to rate the professor and express our experience/issues during the end of class survey.…

Ever since I started elementary school I was told that the main goal in life was to go to college, get a good job and live a good life. That's easier said than done in most cases. Most students don't go to college because it becomes too difficult or the students are intimidated by the amount of work is assigned. But for most students, including me, can not go because of how expensive it is to be able to go. This has become a huge problem for students for decades and has steadily been improving throughout the years or so I’ve been told.…
At first, the financial obligation of attending a community college was somewhat manageable. Admittedly, I had to pay close attention to my budget, but the tuition was not out of my reach. In fact, because of my lower income, I qualified for financial assistance. However, after completing my studies at community college, it was necessary that I attend a four-year institution to complete my degree. In contrast, the expense of attending community college was a sizable difference to attending a four-year institution.…
When I was younger I grew up working around horses, and I always helped my dad train and keep clean. Once I learned what it took to take care of my horses I came to love it. Once I got to high school I got in the program FFA. I raised a pig for two years , and being around farm animals and raising them was fun. My experience around all that is how I became interested in the career to be a veterinarian.…

Title Enrolling the EOF program has lighten up a path in life that would have gone completely undiscovered had I walked alone. Along the path was my introduction to college writing, a class that has improved my writing skills profoundly. At first the tasks given to us on the syllabus seemed daunting, almost insurmountable within the five-week period of the program; it seemed even more inconceivable with the class being only twice a week. However, with the guidance and instruction given to me by the professor and peers I was able to strengthen my work as a student.…
Literature Review The fact that those enrolled in developmental education courses start off their search for a better education with difficulties makes them have thoughts of dropping out and giving up on college. In order to move on with their education, a student must pass one of their first obstacles which is to successfully complete one or more remedial courses. In reality, many students struggle trying to complete this step. The criteria as to whether students are placed in educational courses vary within each institution. Some colleges take into consideration the following grade-point average, courses taken in high school, a combination of student’s high school records and exam scores, and remedial placement is considered as well…
Introduction The time I spent with my student during our tutoring sessions gave me a first-hand experience of how it is like on a student to teacher level. I learned a lot from my student, Kade, as I hope he also learned from me. During this time, I was able to observe his strengths and his weakness. I had to be flexible to cater my lesson plan to my student, so he could build upon what he learned and advance through more challenging activities.…
