CCOM Reflection

Improved Essays
CCOM is a socially driven medical school dedicated to educating its students on the value of patient-centered care, diversity, and willingness to improve the world. An integrative approach to healing is at the forefront of medicine, and it is incredible to see how CCOM educates its students about the whole-body from the start of medical school. Patient-centered care with a focus on osteopathic and holistic techniques should not be a privilege. Diversity should not stand in the way of everyone receiving equal treatment, but rather encourage doctors to learn about different cultures and societies.
The community I grew up in, was surrounded by hard working people who believed it was important to give back to neighboring cities, especially those in need. It has been a dream of mine to integrate holistic values into my physician practice, such as my passion for yoga as a form of exercise and its benefits to the mind, body and spirit. Yoga has kept me grounded and allowed me to connect with others on a more personal and meaningful level. My love for yoga, meditation and mindfulness will enable me to help my peers, and eventually my patients, by providing them with holistic tools to overcome hardships.

I believe everyone should have access to learning about healthcare, and throughout my career, I hope to educate and inspire underserved populations. In addition to educating students on the importance of patient-care, CCOM focuses on giving back to the entire state of Illinois and beyond. Being part of a medical community, whose top priority is ensuring medically underserved communities are being heard and taken care of, is very important to me. This is why I strongly believe CCOM will help me become the physician I aspire to

Since my second semester at UT, I have devoted 15 hours a week to volunteering as a Young Life leader. Every week I help run a club meeting for dozens of high school kids, manage a planning meeting with my teammates, and lead a small group for sophomore girls. I spend hours at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School watching games and performances, and simply getting to know these young adults. Through investing this time to build relationships as a mentor and role model, I strove to show these girls that they are significant, noticed and valued. Volunteering as a Young Life leader has taught me invaluable lessons in building relationships, caring for others, and working with a team that will help me to be a more supportive and productive physician…

In addition to learning about traditional forms of medicine and keeping traditions alive, this class helped me connect with my culture and embrace a part of it that is becoming harder and harder to connect with. Like many individuals from small towns in New Mexico, my first experience with curanderismo was a personal one. My grandmother, for the short time that I knew her, would…

What draws me to the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine’s Arizona Campus is its commitment to developing physicians dedicated to serving patients. The Science of Health Care Delivery curriculum draws attention to the political, social, and economic forces that affect health care. As aspiring medical practitioners, students aware of these factors can better understand the circumstances of patients they care for. While serving as the Financial Director of the Campus Y, a public advocacy and service organization under the YMCA, I was immersed in the day-to-day operations of a non-profit by working on budget management and community partnership development. Understanding the logistics of the organization further strengthened my passion to support the…

I have observed the various ways physicians interact with their patients and staff in the times that I’ve volunteered and shadowed Dr. Layth. Discovering that personal interactions with patients are crucial, I found that the primary focus as a caregiver was to provide not only physical, but also, mental, emotional, and at times, spiritual support. With these qualities, I am determined to contribute towards the growth of my colleagues and AZCOM as a whole. I will bring forth a deep desire to learn, an enduring will, and a humble, team-oriented attitude towards my colleagues. Furthermore, I have successfully balanced academics with my position as a shift manager at a local restaurant in the Phoenix area.…

Realizing the deficits in numbers of primary care physicians has been a chief motivator for me to pursue osteopathic medicine at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. My home town in Ohio is one of these medically underserved areas, and working with and receiving my tutelage from the few physicians in my area, I wish to come back to serve it. One of these physicians, an osteopathic family physician, piqued my interest in osteopathic medicine, mostly due to my agreements with the philosophy of the practice. I appreciate the holistic view of medicine that osteopathic medical schools, like the Ohio University Heritage College of Medicine, teach and practice by, and I believe patients appreciate it as well. Understanding…

Health complications in my youth and the frequent hospital trips that ensued showed me the fear and pain that patients feel. This allows me to relate and understand what others are going through. It became my childhood dream to become a physician and help patients like me to reduce the suffering and live healthier lives. My experiences serving others have also exposed me to the issues within my community and demonstrated ways I can and have made an impact, which aligns with Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine’s commitment to serving the community. I co-founded Heal L.A. at UCLA to aid the homeless population around campus, volunteered in Asian Pacific Health Corps, and served in a research lab to reduce racial disparities in transplant.…

The field is always growing and changing and I yearn to undertake in this lifetime of learning. I find it so exciting that one day I can serve people by improving their health and do so using cutting-edge technologies, some which may have yet to be invented. I may not be able to change the world on the whole, but small actions can have a big influence. I look forward to creating a positive impact on a personal level, treating holistically and compassionately, as this is a career path that calls for an understanding of the human experience as much as it does an understanding of the human body. It is this interplay of science and service that makes medicine so unique, so compelling, and so fit a profession for me to…
