CBM Data Probes
Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) 6th Edition can be used to collect Curriculum Based Measurements (CBM). DIBELS are a list of procedures and measures for assessing of achievements of early literacy skills from kindergarten through sixth grade. It can be used to identify children who are at risk for reading difficulties and provide information to educators for target interventions to core components or early literacy. DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency (DORF) is a measure of advanced phonics and word attack skills, accurate and fluent reading of connected text and reading comprehension. The passages and procedures that are included are based on the program of research and development of Curriculum-Based Measurement of reading by Stan Deno and colleagues at the University of Minnesota. (Deno, 1989) The two components of DORF are oral reading fluency and the passage retell. The probes are designed to be quick one minute measures that can be used to monitor the progress and development of early literacy and early reading skills. The administrator is to follow the directions verbatim each time the probe is given to the student.
