On October 1st, Diane McCall came to inform our class on CASA. CASA ( an acronym for Court Appointed Special Advocate) serves children who have been removed from their home by Child Protective Services (CPS) and is devoted to the best interest of the child. When CASA is called by the courts, they become the legal guardian of the child and they assume the responsibilities of the parent until they find a suitable living arrangement for the child. In order to successfully accomplish this, they are privy to private information such as medical records, school records, and counseling sessions. It is their goal to find stable environment for the child while the parents receive treatment and/or adjust their living situation.
CASA is a national organization and has offices in several states. The office that serves Collin County is located in McKinney, Texas. An interesting fact learned, is that it serves over 500 kids a year and cost the taxpayers $0; these services are not billed out to the county. with it being a non-profit, CASA is a volunteer based organization. Cases involve several forms of child abuse, including: drug abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect and abandonment . Despite the fact that a list has been given, that’s only what the children are going through. The parents also come with a heavy load. In addition to losing custody of their children (even if only temporarily), they have enough to deal with the conditions that led them to the loss of their child. These triggers often include one or more of the following: loss of employment, economic instability, poverty, drug use, and immaturity. Often times, the parents are handing off children to grandparents due to their inability to handle the responsibility of parenting a child or in many cases multiple children.
