A young girl and boy greet summer visitors under an umbrella at one of Sauk Centre’s greatest assets along the river. Although they have been holding this umbrella for over 100 years, they have not aged a bit but have, in fact, grown to become a symbol for the town’s beautiful Sinclair Lewis Park. The two are part of a fountain piece in one section of the park which also includes a playground, picnic area, fishing pier and campground. While towns near Sauk Centre have some sort of green space, few match the beauty, the versatility, and usability of the five city parks.…
I strolled through Grant Park on a sunny Saturday evening looking for a bench that I could sit on while I enjoyed some time in the park. I wanted to sit down and unwind for about an hour as I watched the type of people that came into the park and what they did. Looking around, I saw that there were 3 somewhat rusty benches at the front of the park all engraved with “Grant Park” on the backing of the bench. Across from the row of benches, there was a playground that was surrounded by a square, wooden frame. Inside the frame, there were many kids running around on the slides, monkey bars, and all of the other play structures.…
The final sample size at Jefferson Park was 23 respondents. Infrastructure Respondents at Jefferson Park collectively agreed that the park needs infrastructure improvement, but were satisfied with its current state. It was surprising to learn that no one was very unsatisfied with the sports fields/courts or the condition of the equipment at this park. When interviewed, most individuals were content with the condition and variety of the fields available to them because of their purpose for using the park. However, the respondents indicated a high need for restroom, tennis courts, and basketball courts improvements.…
Jennifer Maxam C. Wright Mills defined social imagination as "the vivid awareness of the relationship between personal experience and the wider society.” What he conveys is that social imagination is the ability to see the relationship between large-scale social forces and the personal actions of individuals. One of the biggest examples is something that we will all have to encounter at least once in our lifetime, for some it may be more than others. This would be finding a job. Education comes with a price, a very large price; this leads to loans that need to be re-paid.…

Whereas today, parents struggle to get their children to play outside, the 1950’s and 60’s was a time in which the challenge was getting them to come back inside. As time went on, though, Jacobs came to make interesting observations about open spaces. In her research she found that the parts of city that exhibited an abundance of “beautiful”, open, green spaces were precisely the ones in which the least amount of people regularly made use of the sidewalks. She also found that oftentimes these open spaces were not being…
Parks have been around as long as we can remember. At school we would play at parks, when you get home you begged your parents if you could go and play. When you turn into a teenager, you and your friends would hang around, maybe cause some trouble. During this time, you never looked at the park and thought “wow, why would we want to come here?” Have you ever driven past somewhere that you used to go as a teenager or a child and realize how much time has changed things, or how much things have gone downhill?…
“Neither the life of an individual nor the history of a society can be understood without understanding both” (Mills, 1959) - This is what C. Wright Mills mentioned in The Sociological Imagination. It is true that if we would like to understand our own life, we have to obtain sociological imagination which enable us to understand how history and institutions shapes our own biography and personal choice. Therefore, I would like to discuss how my own biography and history within society intersects. To begin with my family background, I am the only child of my family. In the past, I have been troubled by my family’s unwillingness to have any more babies.…
In ‘’The Mass Society’’, Charles Wright Mills discusses the differences between a public and a mass. He considers that these two concepts are on opposite sides of the spectrum and that, to begin to understand how they diverge, four distinctions must be considered (p.302). In the first place, Mills notes that the ratio of people who voice their opinion versus those who receive them differs greatly (p.302). Moreover, the public and the mass don’t have the same power " […] of answering back an opinion without internal or external reprisals being taken" (p.302).…

Each one section assumes a significant part that brings life to a city. “Open spaces like squares and parks were the lungs of the city, the center was the heart pumping blood (traffic) through the arteries (the streets) – and so on” (Kostof, 52). Parks bring life into cities. They are areas to assemble, meet, and associate. community characterizes cities and without spots for individuals to meet up then that city is not, fruitful.…
