How To Characterize C's Pre-Assessment

Improved Essays
C is an above grade level learner in my second grade class. He is an extremely intelligent student performing above average than his classmates. C demonstrated effective listening, speaking, and reading skills. This resulted in C being able to master grade level skills through pre-tests, various class assignments, and post-tests. Prior to covering any chapter, the teacher provides the student with a pre-test to determine their knowledge of a concept. The pre-test also helps the teacher decide the time length needed to spend teaching a concept within the chapter. C scored advanced on his pre-test. This ensured me that C was ready to begin chapter 5 in mathematics being that he understood the basic facts of addition.
After analyzing his pre-test, I feel that his handwriting could improve by writing his numbers fully. C’s progress from the pre-test to the post-test slightly decreased. He scored a B on his chapter 5 post-test. As I was monitoring the classroom during the assessment, I noticed that C was either the first or second person done with the assessment. I encouraged him to check his work prior to turning in the assessment by circling the numbers to indicate that he checked his work for neatness and accuracy. When grading the assessment, I noticed that he missed the questions in the vocabulary section. This concerned me that

C could also be the leader of a group to assist his classmates that may be struggling with a concept. C is ready for higher level addition, so he could possibly being learning how to add three three-digit numbers. He would also benefit from working with other students that are on his level in which they could all work together on a higher level. I also believe C would enjoy being able to present a lesson to the class with help from the teacher. C needs to continue to be challenged in his learning

Field Experience at Wildwood and Ernest Manning My cohort of ten was assigned to visit two schools over a two-week period with a full week dedicated to each location. The two schools were Wildwood elementary and Ernest Manning high school and while their relative closeness to one another would suggest that some Wildwood students may eventually be at Ernest Manning, they are opposites in terms of their status, how they carry themselves, and what they believe to be most important for students. Wildwood elementary is an old school as observed from its small and outdated architecture. Classes are small and at times claustrophobic, especially when packed with 20-25 of the nearly 600 students making it difficult if not impossible to navigate the…

One of the questions dealt with asking about what he viewed as distractions. By asking this question, it led him to discuss some of the issues that he was dealing with at home, such as his parents’ divorce and their custody issues. This helped guide the conversation and helped me start to understand why he may have been acting the way he was. However, there were some questions that I wished I would have asked during the assessment. I do not believe that I fully discussed with him about how he felt about his homework and his grades.…

Some of the internal or academic consequences of these test could be seen in the way the students were prepared for these external test. Students were subject to switching curriculum and instruction methods. The strongest impact of the test system was seen in the time constraints and the inflexibility that resulted. Teachers were left with limited time for skill based curriculum such as computation, comprehension, grammar, problem-solving, and science, being replaced by the external testing based practice. The researchers also reported that teachers felt the students were psychological and physically…

Analysis of Running Records The names below are the names of the students that I have assessed by performing running records according to their instructional reading level. Kelly, Lilly, Roxanne, and Andres are reading below grade level, they are English Language Learners and they are in an all English instruction classroom. For all four students, I used reading assessments from the McGraw-Hill Website which provided me reading passages with two questions at the end to check for comprehension. Since my students are reading at different reading levels, I had to provide them with different reading passages based on their reading levels, I used a total of two different passages since I have two students reading at first grade level, and the…

I completely agree with the statement, “If you think you’re not a reading teacher, think again!” All content areas have a language and involve some varying degrees of reading which includes domain specific vocabulary words, sentence structure, text features, etc. that students need to know how to navigate in order to fully learn and comprehend the text. For example, in math students need to understand what terms such as “greater than” and “all together” mean in order to solve word problems. Although a math teacher is not specifically teaching decoding or comprehension, they are responsible for teaching students the language of math so that they are able to fully understand that content.…

INTASC Standards: 8, 9 Standard #8 - “The teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social and physical development of the learner (Henson, 2009).” As a teacher it is important to use a variety of assessments to evaluate and ensure that students understand and are learning the content presented in the classroom. In addition to giving traditional assessments such as a quiz, exam or paper, alternatives that will be provided include group assessments, self-assessment, portfolios, observations and performance assessments. By applying varied assessment methods a check for understanding of a student’s knowledge will be better assessed since there are limitations with different types of evaluations.…
