In the BIO 14 Lab, we attempted to design a oviposition experiment that would tell us something about the relative behavior of two variants of a beetle species Callosobruchus maculatus (SI – originating from South India & BF – originating from Burkina Faso). The specific question being asked in our experiment is: How does the availability of the preferred bean type affect the oviposition strategy (measured by the number of eggs on each bean) of female SI and BF beetles? Throughout history, our understanding of neurological sciences has vastly improved alongside the examination and research of C. elegans. Through their ease of accessibility, C. elegans, have become a staple organism in discovering the mechanisms in which the nervous system promotes survival (Allen et al. 2015). The C. elegans’ structural integral is very straightforward, consisting of 302 neurons, with 60 of them being sensory neurons (Pieczynski 2016). Thanks to this simplicity, we can easily observe C. elegans’ reaction to various reactions to stimuli in order to observe changes in behavior. Gene crossover, the exchange of genetic material between two homologous chromosomes, can be observed in many different instances with the help of model organisms. Many scientists observe gene crossover to better comprehend the heritability patterns of unrelated genes (Chen and Olive, 1965). In the case of this experiment, the use of Sodaria allowed students to observe the inheritance pattern of two different phenotypes when crossed in a a petri dish (Saleem, et al., 2001). Sordaria, a microfungi commonly found in feces of herbivores, was the subject of this study. The experiments showed that the rate of action potentials can be affected by different stimulus and obstacles, like temperature or rate of which the action potential reaches the source though different obstacles. The earthworm experiment showed that action potentials work best under normal temperatures at which the organism can operate under like room temperature. Like in the FM imaging experiment it showed that most the earthworms sensors are on the surface of the earthworm, if the temperature isn’t ideal for the earthworm then the action potentials won’t fire fast enough to get away from prey under those circumstances. The cooling effects placed on the earthworm effects the medial neuron which slows all action potentials coming and going. The other part of this experiment showed that when stimulus strength and durations of the action potentials are changed to higher frequencies the less time the cell has get out the the absolute refractory period, which means no other action potential will fire until it moves to relative refractory period.…

To determine the unknown’s morphology is the first step in narrowing down possible organisms. A MacConkey and Mannitol Salt Agar tests were conducted on the organism and revealed the following. No growth on the MacConkey plate resulting in a gram positive bacteria and the Mannitol Salt Agar result showed it could be Staphylococcus or Micrococcus.
