It is composed of two sections: the central nervous system, which includes the brain and the spinal cord, as well as the peripheral nervous system, which is responsible for transmitting signals from the central nervous system to target cells within the body. The nervous system is comprised of neurons, or nerve cells, that rule how an individual will respond to a stimulus. Sensory neurons, such as the ASE neuron, receive a stimulus from the internal or external environment through dendrites, and convert the stimulus into a signal that is sent into the central nervous system (Urry et al. 2013). Interneurons located within the central nervous system serve as a bridge between sensory and motor neurons, which determine one’s physical responses to stimuli (Urry et al. 2013).
