Bystander Book Report

Decent Essays
My book is called Bystander. It follows the life of a young boy named Eric who is new to Bellport, Long Island. As a seventh grader it is scary to move to a new school, especially if you do not know anybody going into it. Early in the book, he becomes “friends” with the school bully and his followers. This however was a big mistake. He gets himself into uncomfortable positions where he has to decide to stand up to Griffin (the bully) or stand behind him. My presentation took place on October ninth. Going into the presentation I was a little nervous because of the fact that I did not properly prepare. I did have a notecard with a number of bulleted points to talk about. However, they could have been a bit more organized. My goals for this speech …show more content…
One of them being how easy it was to follow. I picked easy information to understand while still being very important. I gave just enough information so my audience knew what was going on, but not too much to where they stopped paying attention. Another strength being the life in my voice. I had passion about what I was talking about and actually enjoyed it. Another aspect I did well on was eye contact. I looked at every person in the audience making them feel like I was talking to them individually. Finally, I used several gestures. Using gestures while talking is very uncomfortable to me. I like to talk with my hands in my pockets. However, in this speech I did a much better job talking with my hands than in any other of my speeches.
WEAKNESSES
Just like how I had plenty of strengths, there are definitely still things I need to work on. My speech would have gone so much better if I was better organized and practiced more. I kind of just threw some important information together without thinking about everything that should be included in the speech. The information I included was really good, however I just needed to add more and organize it better. Lastly, at points in my speech I talked too fast and repeated several phrases.

The general purpose of this speech was to draw attention to our societal isolation, and how we don’t do enough to promote positive mental health. Mr. Junger talks about the horrors of war, and the toll it takes on veterans. He talks about PTSD and the mental health of these veterans. He then talks about how these veterans return to the U.S., and find themselves isolated and alone. He uses examples of how bad veteran suicide is here, and contrasts that with the Navajo warriors and Israeli soldiers.…

After watching my speech on video I recognized several things that beforehand I believed I had done well, and upon watching the speech, did do very well. Firstly was my organization, but mainly my introduction and main points. Both of these had all aspects covered and were easy to notice during the speech. Secondly I thought I did very well with my volume, rate, and vocal variety. These verbal delivery attributes came off very well in my speech and I was very happy to see that I could still execute these aspects.…

It probably could have made my speech better and would have been easier to work on my body language. (3) Repeating words. Since I didn’t have an outline with me on stage, I was basing my entire speech off my memory. In reflection to my second speech in public speaking, I believe it turned out better this time than the last. When I got up in front of the class, I was a little shaken up. Final Persuasive Speech Reflection Believe me when I say that my progress from then to now has come a long way. Initially after giving the persuasive speech, I felt that there has been little process in all of this time that I had spent trying to learn to communicate more effectively. Worst of all perhaps, I felt powerless to do anything to change this. This was my most practiced speech and it did not feel that way. Even the thought of having to go back and essentially relive those 7 minutes was not something I was particularly excited about.…

During my process of creating my first speech there were a lot of mixed emotions from the thrill of being able to choose a topic that I get to dive into and learn, to the anxiety that filled me when it came to speech day. Reviewing my feelings towards this assignment and watching my final work come to life I can see the spots that I predicted would do well and the spots that I psyched myself out on failing. Of course my thoughts and anxiety got the best of me and although preparing up to the faithful speech day went really well, my execution needs a lot of work. Reviewing my topic for a specific purpose I did struggle a little bit with it. How does one narrow down such a big topic?…
