In the case of Blanche and Christabel a man is not even in the picture. Christabel makes a living by writing poetry and Blanche tries to earn some money by selling paintings, but that is not nearly enough to live off. This means that Blanche is almost entirely dependent on the money Christabel makes. Without Christabel Blanche would have had no money. Therefor she has very little possibilities to start over. In the 20th century women started to fight for their rights; they wanted to be equal to men. Birth control rights made women start to have children at an older age and therefor they were able to get better education than before; and with that better jobs and more welfare (Pezzini 208). Standing on the curb, Veronica pulled her jacket tighter against the breeze, and exhaled the slightest bit when the charger came into view. Through the car’s heavy tint, she couldn’t see the driver exactly, but the effortlessly smug look from the driver’s seat when she climbed in was instantly familiar. Hands at her sides, feeling the seat’s leather as he peeled away from the curb, Veronica had to miss the bike, a little. Sure, the threat of death rang less imminent, even in the seat termed ‘shotgun,’ but oddly enough, sharing a console felt more intimate than the physical proximity of sharing the motorcycle. “Are you gonna tell me what this is about?”…

Prejudice - “an unfair feeling of dislike for a person or group because of race, sex, religion, etc.” In a world filled with a plethora of races in the world, prejudice still seems to be alive and well. Prejudice is something that does not discriminate who it affects and in what situation. The judgements people make based on stereotypes can truly cripple someone or it can even not allow people to resist immersing themselves in culture. The novels The Poisonwood Bible and The Concubine’s Children both show evidence of prejudice but on different sides of the spectrum.…

This quote depicts how the author Williams characterizes Blanche as narcissist, even after being stricken with poverty and misfortune. The structure of the story play a critical role in this where the readers can compare the past of Blanche and just how twisted of a turn that it takes near the end of the play which gives a very powerful ending that ends with this quote. The dilemma of Blanche with fantasy and reality are the major factors that make her unable to accept reality for what truly is happening around her. The mood of this quote is very neutral and a sane person would have reacted in a more emotional manner. Overall Blanche has protected herself with illusion against the true of horror of reality.…

From the first scene the audience learns that Blanche and Stella were brought up on a plantation and that Stanley and his friends are poor and uneducated. In the first scene the two families come together in a scruffy environment, it is therefore Blanche who must adjust to the situation. When Stanley exposes Blanche's past and when he rapes her, he turns her ‘upper-class’ upbringing (of which she is very proud) into something without any meaning. The conflict, therefore, is bigger than Stanley vs. Blanche or even male vs. female, it is the Old South vs. the new ind ustrial age and the upper-class life vs. the ‘common’ life. With Blanche, it is not only her sinful ways that causes her misery, it is her upper-class upbringing and clinging to the past that is one of the reasons for her downfall - a tragic end for a tragic character.…

Having a very strong relationship with their father is something that a lot of girls want to make sure they have in their lives, and in the case of Cosette and Valjean in Les Miserables, written by Victor Hugo, that seems to be very true. Jean Valjean and Cosette are characters that are both able to bring life and happiness into each other’s lives because in the beginning Valjean is there for Cosette, meanwhile Cosette gives purpose for Valjean’s life, but I wouldn’t always say their relationship was necessarily the best for them. First and foremost, Jean Valjean was there for Cosette in the beginning when she needed him the most. “As a child, Cosette is beaten, belittled, and deprived terribly of basic physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. … There is no figure to love her or support her, and the Thenardiers can in no way provide nourishment for her spirit” (http://rueplumet_no.55.…

Gender inequality is an issue that has been happening for thousands of years, affecting cultures from all around the world. Women have endured since ancient times the title as the inferior being, the “other” gender besides the man, the weaker and less valuable specimen. This gender inequality created a huge difference between men and women, placing women’s rights under men’s jurisdiction, which dictated what women were and were not allowed to do. This issue was analyzed by the French and feminist supporter and writer Simone de Beauvoir in her text, “Woman as Other.” In her essay de Beauvoir explains the entire concept of women being considered the “other” gender apart from the men.…
