He says, “Nevertheless, my knowledge and my lack of knowledge burned in me – I wished to know more.” (p. 312, line 43-44) When John reaches the Place of the Gods, he thought the curse would kill him. It turns out he lives. John describes walking around the streets of this large city with towers standing so tall. A group of dogs were following him around. He was told that the land was always on fire and fog was always settled there but really he sees a peaceful empty and quiet city. John also finds a monument with the name of Ashing. We can all infer it was Washington. As night sets, John enters a standing building with many rooms and chooses a room to stay for the night. He sets a fire and falls

John eventually grasps the complexity of Owen’s message and learns to believe in predestination years later, after Owen’s death. He also begins to see how everything Owen ever did was for a purpose later in life, reassuring John’s newly founded belief in predestination. Johns learning to accept Owen as an instrument of God after his death further increases his faith in God. Through changing beliefs and faiths, Johnny develops multiple viewpoints on God, of which he must learn to accept…

John and Absalom believe in God, but Nicholas believes that astrology can tell you about what is going to happen. It seems that because Nicholas does not believe in God he makes up lies to get what he wants. He tells John that he has gotten information from his astrology when he says, “You must upon your true faith swear, right her, that to no man will you this word betray; for it is Christ’s own word that I will say, and if you tell a man, you’re ruined quite;” (Chaucer 105). As the story continues Nicholas tells John that there is going to be a flood so he should build an ark for all of them to be saved. In the story of Oedipus, there are several examples that show man’s relationship with the truth. The oracle predicts the truth about the future of Laius, Jocasta, and Oedipus. Killing his father and marrying his mother are both examples of what the oracle predicted about them. In Oedipus Rex, Sophocles shows that, in the case of finding truth, if a man starts in search for the truth, he must find the whole truth, but if a man never starts in search for the truth, he can stay ignorant of the truth. The story of Oedipus shows that the better of the two is staying ignorant of the truth.…
