Norman Vincent Peale worked as an American Minister and author known for his work about positive thinking. A famous quote by him preaches, “Change your thoughts and you can change the world.” This quote relates to my essay very well because when you change your thinkings based on something else, good things can happen.One can respond to change more effectively through reading about others who have preserved through all challenges.

At the beginning, Jim Abbott is currently playing with USA baseball in Tennessee. He just finished his sophomore season at Michigan. When Jim is talking about USA baseball and the rise of his confidence, he states,”For the first time, I thought maybe I could competed against anyone and have the same chance to play professionally” (Abbott 129). Jim loved playing baseball, but he never thought he could play professionally. Once he arrived at USA baseball, he saw that he could compete. He pitched well and fit in perfectly. He was getting coached on how to field bunts properly, expanding his game. He changed from not knowing if he could compete, to seeing he could and excel in it. His confidence grew and his pitching skills followed. Finally, Jim begins to grow as a player, due to his performance with USA baseball. Next, Jim’s skill and playing ability took him to the next level. The day of the draft is upon Jim. He talks about being selected very high in the draft. Jim is talking about being drafted by a team not familiar to Michigan. He disregards that and exclaimed, ”It was time, I was going to get paid for playing baseball, which I’d only recently began to consider” (141). His confidence and skill plummeted due to this. Jim is still going through a rough patch in his career. He is coming of a horrible season in Anaheim. Dana and him are pregnant with their first daughter. Jim’s poor pitching performance and the team’s lack of winning caused a winning season for Jim. He sadly says,”A week later, after 8 full major-league seasons, I was sent to the minor leagues” (234). Jim’s lack of skill for playing in the big leagues finally sent him to the minor leagues. He did not think of this as a punishment, he thought of this as a fresh start. He obtained a chance to rejuvenate his career. At first, he was sad and angry because of the potential he had wasted. Now, he wants to succeed to prove he his a spot to fit in. This chance was an opportunity to provide a new start to his career. Finally, Jim’s struggle as a pitcher rejuvenated his career. Afterwards, Jim is describing his rookie season in the big leagues. He is talking about McClure called him out on his pitching.Jim describes McClure was a stern, caring man. McClure yells,”You’re not as good as you should be,” he said in a room that had gone quiet except for his voice. “You’re not living up to your potential.” I looked at him without expression.
