Philbrook Field Trip

Philbrook Response Paper

I have always dreamed of going to Italy to see and experience all of the great art that is housed there. On Friday November 6, 2015 I got to fulfill a small part of that dream as Ms.

Trotter’s Art Appreciation class went on a Field Trip to the Philbrook Museum in Tulsa, Ok. The Philbrook used to be a residence owned by Waite Phillips of Phillips 66. The purpose of this field trip was to see some of the pieces of art that we have discussed in class throughout the semester. I believe that another purpose of the field trip was to expose some students to pieces of art and the environment that they would not have been exposed to without this class. I think that the trip to the Philbrook was a success on both accounts.

As mentioned before, it was built for Waite Phillips and his family as a residence. It was built in 1927 by the architect Delk. The family wanted a house that was inspired by Italy, so they sent Delk to Italy to gather inspiration. He found a small village in Italy, Villa Lante to use for inspiration. Because of its Italian inspiration, the house has many aspects of Italy throughout. Some examples are the Corinthian columns found in the entryway, the frieze images that are found all over the house, and even the shingles used to roof the house. My personal favorite part of the house was the garden area. I found its beauty magical. I especially loved the double reflecting pool. If you are standing on the terrace the Tempietto is reflected in the pool but if standing in the Tempietto …show more content…
Not only did the architecture give the feel of being in Italy, so did the artwork. Especially the Renaissance area located in the loggia. Italy was the main location of the Renaissance so it is only fitting that, being Italian inspired, there were pictures from the Renaissance era. As Ms. Trotter told us while entering the Philbrook, “Going to Philbrook is like going to Italy without even leaving Oklahoma.” Paintings in this area showed typical Renaissance features such as, the light and dark effect called chiaroscuro, depictions of the crucifixion showing stigmatas, and symbolism like Mary being depicted in red or blue. My favorite piece of art was by Alexander Hogue. The piece was titled, “Mother Earth Laid Bare”. The picture was painted in 1936 was that the second in a series that he painted showing the Great Depression. In the picture there is a woman’s body depicted in the land with a plow laying at the base. I like this piece because it was done during the Great Depression. The great Depression was a time where many people in central North America found it hard to make ends meet. The reason for this hard time was mainly because of poor farming techniques which is what is being portrayed in the picture. He said that when his mother talked to him about Mother Nature, he envisioned a woman lying under the surface of the ground that needed to be tread on lightly, so by painting the body of a woman, he

My visit to the Nelson-Atkins museum was unlike any of my other visits to museums. First of all, I had a solid purpose for going and found myself paying much more attention to the intricacies of pieces I was viewing. Secondly, due to its sheer size, this museum had a wide variety of art from many different cultures and time periods, giving each hallway and room a different feel. Lastly, I felt much more educated about what I was viewing, when compared to previous experiences. I waited until the 8th of July to drive to Kansas City and thus had read most of content that would be covered over the semester.…

Regionalist painter Thomas Hart Benton, the son of a Missouri congressman, believed that art could be used as a tool for social change. He felt that by combining “aspects of the modern world with the values of hard work, individualism, and community associated with the rural experience” they would provide an understanding of the strength of the American people and provide faith and a sense of patriotism in itself (Haskell 221). He, along with fellow Regionalist artists such as Grant Wood, created art that mirrored the people and communities of rural America. Roosevelt’s WPA had similar designs in mind. In response to the devastating effects of the depression, the goal of the WPA was to involve local artists and communities to develop and create public art projects all while being paid for a useful service.…

I maintained this plan, arriving at Boston University as an archaeology major but after several semesters of study realized that it wasn’t the exact path for me. I began to grow my appreciation of museums, admiring how they could ignite wonder, curiosity, and learning in myself and others. I realized this was where I felt most at home. Therefore, I decided to change my major to art history, while retaining an archaeology minor, and explore history through the lens of artist’s interpretations and ideas.…
