My past experiences in Boundary Waters have drastically changed my life by teaching me lessons about myself and the world around me. One of these is that every time I have the opportunity to take a trip to the BWCA, I am reminded of my values and why I stand for my beliefs. For example, I have learned about how important it is for me, as a person who is fiercely passionate about keeping the BWCA pristine and beautiful, to fight for this issue. The people on my Long Border trip last summer told me about the possible sulfide mining operations near the Boundary Waters. Because of this, when I joined my school’s speech team this year, I picked Original Oratory as my category. Competitors in Original Oratory write persuasive speeches with the enormous goal to change the world. In my speech, I am addressing the issue of the possible sulfide mining near the BWCA and the repercussions that it would have on both the wildlife and people around it. I want to educate people about the pollution that mining companies would create and how it would impact not only people’s lives, but also the ecosystems in the Boundary Waters and in other areas that would be impacted (like Lake Superior). It is appalling that sulfide mining operations near the Boundary Waters are even being considered and I want to do all that I can to stop mining from happening there. Each trip to the BWCA makes me more passionate about saving it and gives me stories to tell other people to help them realize how important it is to keep the Boundary Waters clean and
