Mr. Schoofs, I’m Caroline Gage, an eighth grade student at an average middle school. But does attending an average middle school mean that my peers and myself must fit the mold of an average student? Over the course of the year, I’ve come to notice the amount of teachers and students who are unenlightened and frankly, uninterested about the happenings of the world. According to the Huffington Post and Quantcast, almost 8 percent of BuzzFeed’s 97.9 million users between the ages 12 and 17; nearly 8 million people! Not to mention the 23 million 18 to 24-year-olds who also view BuzzFeed. That’s 31 million school-age teens and adults that visit BuzzFeed every day; including myself. But why do we all stray towards the quizzes and random lists when we could easily click on stories detailing the state of the world? BuzzFeed’s following continues to grow every month, making it more and more influential to people my age. What I’m getting at is this: BuzzFeed News has the ability to reach millions of teens and adults with articles that inform and entertain at the same time. A combination of news and amusement would be mutually beneficial for BuzzFeed and its audience. A study by the Pew Research Center uncovered that only 27% of …show more content…
In 2017, we have more access to information than ever before, yet so many people don’t take advantage of it. Imagine the impact of educated citizens. People my age could form educated opinions instead of only listening to what their parents say. A democracy’s greatest strength is an informed electorate. Perhaps if people were more informed before the 2016 presidential election, there would have been a different outcome. Along with a more well versed public, BuzzFeed News would have more people reading their articles. You would likely begin to see both younger and older age groups reading the

I remember when Donald Trump first announced his political run for office. He built his campaign on the slogan: We’re going to Make America Great Again, “reinforced” by his bold claim of “building a wall”. When Trump got down into the weeds with Megyn Kelly during the first Fox News Republican debate, I sensed Donald Trump was a proud and arrogant man. I went on my own campaign against him; making phone calls, writing emails, calling news agencies and talk shows, posting madly to Facebook — whatever I could do to try to stop a really bad person from wrecking the Republican Party and damaging the nation. NeverTrump was my obsession, but it was, at that time, merely political for me.…

Do people prefer to watch news with bias? One article of Greg Beato’s entitled "The Spin We Love to Hate" has seemed to present the argument that our media is biased, even though the majority of people prefer news be non-biased. Beato started off his article with a statistic that shows that 67 percent of people prefer that their news was non-biased, which he ironically states that the top news reporters have been doing the exact opposite. The author will go on to present a few examples of websites that analyze news stories for biases and fairness. Beato furthers along his paper presents the program known as SpinSpotter, this program allows users slash bias on websites, which allows other users of SpinSpotter to visit that site and become aware…

When an entire generation grows up being surrounded by vastly improving technology that evolves to suit your needs, with fast products and easy results, they start to lose their patience to search for real answers. According to Valerie S. Thatcher, this affects the students and teachers learning and teaching in the electronic age. Since everything on the internet is found rapidly and effortlessly, often the members of the generation y don’t bother looking into the credibility of their sources, and therefore, their content. In her article, Thatcher makes an attempt to explain how to encourage students to pay attention in class and learn the traditional ways of research. Thatcher did a well-rounded job, but not a perfect job on how to confront the issue that Generation Y has with traditional research because she explains well why the generation gained a reputation a short attention span, and her format although confusing,…

Discovering the Music of Protest There is perhaps no epidemic in America worse then the racism and discrimination black people have face since the creation of this “free” nation. A shameful secret that the American government still barely acknowledged but a very real problem that has only grown with time with police murdering innocent black men, women and children, and the more recent event of having a raging racist elected as the USA’s new president. That is why I have decided to write my essay on “Strange Fruit” by Abel Meeropol performed most famously by Billie Holiday. “Strange Fruit” is perhaps the most iconic protest song in recent memory. With a haunting piano intro followed by Billie Holiday’s shaking voice this song shot to fame being nominated for a bevy of awards, and for good reason, it lingers in your mind the lyrics and it pulls no punches, telling the story of those who died these painful deaths without the rose coloured glasses historians like describe it as.…

The issue of declawing is being made more obvious to the horrors it can cause to your beloved feline friend. When an onychectomy, otherwise known as a declaw, is performed it is equal to cutting off your finger at the first knuckle. The bone of the third phalanx is removed, it is not just cutting the nail off. Cat's nails retract, by cutting into these muscles and tendons you risk serious long-term physical and emotional impacts. 61 of 163 cats experienced chronic pain for 1-42 days after the surgery ("American Veterinary Medical Association", 2016).…

Jon, Holy cow! I was under the impression that reusable bags for groceries were the environmentally responsible alternative for the plastic Walmart Bags! I suppose it makes sense, when I think about it. They have to make them more durable in order to transport our groceries multiple times instead of their single-use plastic cousins. I believe that society is trying to work us towards always using reusable sources instead of the disposable kind.…

After the presidential election, Donald Trump was elected president. Riots broke out, feminists cried, and some people moved to Canada. Honestly trump isn't that bad, he can't start a war in the next 4 years (hopefully), every law and bill he can make has to go through the supreme court, and he cannot change the amendments. So he doesn't really have that much power. So my three issues for trump are wars, taxes, and the wall.…

Every year there are hundreds if not thousands of people who are put in jail even though they are innocent. On January 13, 1999, Hae Min Lee of Woodlawn high school was found dead in Linkin Park. Her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was the one who took the blame. I think Adnan Syed deserves an appeal because in his trails there were inconsistent testimonies, cell phone call logs that had blurry information and the fact that Adnan did not have a violent or aggressive temperament.…

Quite a lot of times I have heard anecdotes of people avoiding STD tests because they're scared of knowing for sure that they have a sexually transmitted disease. They'd prefer to stay in the dark, but while there may have been a twisted logic to this some years ago when little could be done about sexually transmitted diseases, nowadays it makes no sense at all. Some STDs can be cured, and there are ways of managing the symptoms of others to ensure they're barely a hindrance any longer. In the case of the diseases that there are cures for, delaying over a test and treatment can cause irreversible damage to the body, so regular STD tests are all important.…
