Button By Throttle

John Ruskin once said “A little thought and a little kindness are often worth more than a great deal of money.” This reminds me of “Button, Button” a short story in which after Mrs.Lewis gets a cube shaped package, she is caught up in her own selfishness because in the box is a simple button that is explained by a mysterious man, Mr.Steward, who explains that pressing the button will kill a random person in the world and in exchange Mrs.Lewis and her husband will receive $50,000. While Mrs.Lewis is intrigued and willing, her husband wants no part in it as it is “immoral” and tells Mr.Steward to leave. This leads to arguments on what they are going to do with button as the Mrs.Lewis wants to press it for her own selfishness and her husband just wants to get rid of it because he sees it as sick.

In the story, Mrs.Lewis lets money get to her from her own selfishness; this could be seen when she's talking to her husband, “ “the point is,” Norma broke in, “if it’s someone you’ve never seen in your life and never will see, someone whose death you don't even have to know about, you still wouldn't push the button” Arthur stared at her, appalled. “You mean you would?” “Fifty thousand dollars, Arthur” “what has that amount-” “fifty thousand dollars, arthur” Norma interrupted.” This shows that Norma is being selfish and only thinking about herself. She explicitly states her opinion how she wouldn’t mind pressing it
