Buttercup: The True Hero In The Princess Bride

Westley seemed to be in all the right places at the perfect time but, was he the true hero behind the story? Buttercup is a farmer’s daughter who falls in love with Westley, a farm boy. After Westley leaves to go find his fortune, Buttercup hears false rumors that he is dead. Westley returns home to rescue Buttercup, who is to marry Prince Humperdinck. Along the way Westley outsmarts Vizzini, outfights Fezzik, and defeats Indigo Montoya in a battle. Westley eventually saves Buttercup from committing suicide, making him an exceptional example of a hero. A hero is a knowledgeable and strong man that saves a person or group from evil. In the Princess Bride, this is exactly what the hero, Westley achieved. One of the characteristics of a hero is to be physically impressive. Not only did Westley beat the master swordsman, Indigo Montoya in a battle, but won a competition against the giant Fezzik. When Westley was put on Count Tyrone Rugen’s death machine in The Pit of Despair, he managed to live. Westley used his strong and broad body to save Buttercup from the quicksand. The farm boy also managed to fight off a ginormous rodent without use of any great weapons. Buttercup would have been dead if Westley didn’t have his heroic strength and body mass to protect her. Vizzini, Fezzik, and Indigo Montoya all plotted to kidnap Buttercup, the six-fingered man, Count Tyrone Rugen, tortured Westley in the pit of despair, and finally, Prince Humperdinck lied and manipulated Buttercup, in hopes they would get married. Although, Fezzik and Mr. Montoya eventually helped in saving Buttercup, they were never fully committed to rescuing her. The whole movie is based on Westley’s quest to rescue and save Princess Buttercup, for the sake of true love.
