Theories have surfaced throughout the years about biblical imagery in early literary works. The works of Sappho challenges biblical imagery considering her work was done way before Jesus was born. She paints imagery that makes readers connect her words to religion. The questions on scholars’ minds are, did this imagery predict Christ or was it a coincidence. In the biblical world, there is no proof of God being a male, there have been theories expressing beliefs that God had famine characteristics. Sappho captures human imagery that to connect with biblical imagery. Sappho wrote, “But you, O Dika, bind your hair with lovely crowns, tying stems of anise together in your soft hands” (Sappho 157). This line brings connection when Jesus was brought down from the cross after being tortured. Once Jesus was pulled down from the cross he was taken to a tomb for his burial. “Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away” (Matthew 27: 59-60). Sappho mentions angels gaining their wings, which can connect to Matthew 27:52-53, “The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people.” Sappho created the lyrical content in this line as an idea of life after death. Blessed people would come back with wings to help them fly and be at peace with the world. She described the ideal image people think of when they hear/read the word angel. The bible however, describes the deceased coming back to life to walk with Jesus into Heaven. Not necessarily with wings but with the presence of being an angel in their final stage on earth. Both elements prove that there are spirits around to look to for guidance. Jesus serves as a protector just as Sappho describes of her angels in “If Not,
