What's Your Major

Improved Essays
One of the first questions that is asked when you come home from college and see relatives is “what’s your major”. It may not seem like it, but that one question puts a lot of pressure on students. We want approval from our relatives about the major we chose but sometimes the major we chose doesn’t get approval because you might not be financially stable after college. So we choose the major that could potentially earn the respect of our relatives as well as having a good salary but it might not necessarily be a major we like. I originally intended for this paper to be about my career path in joining the military, specifically the Air Force, after college. I chose this career path because I wanted to make my parents happy. Since degrees in management analysis are typically not available, a degree in accounting, business, economics, finance, or marketing can suffice. The major offered at Christopher Newport University that I chose in order to become a business analyst is located in the Luter School of Business which means that I would become a business management major. I would choose to pursue a bachelor of business administration (BSBA) which is a minimum of 69 credit hours as well as a minimum of 120 hours of work (internships). The pre-business classes that are required before I actually pursue a business degree include: MATH 125, MATH 135, ACCT 201, ACCT 202, BUSN 231, CPSC 215, ECON 201, ECON 202, PHIL 207. The actual business major classes include: BUSN 304, BUSN 311, BUSN 323, BUSN 351, BUSN 371, BUSN 418, MGMT 310, MGMT 355, MGMT 400, MGMT 410, and MGMT …show more content…
There are a lot of different study abroad programs that a student could take that would go towards credit hours for a business degree. Those programs are located in Peru, Austria, China, Portugal, Australia, Wales, New Zealand, Italy, The Netherlands, and London. I would like to go to Cimba, Italy where I would take two summer courses. The first course is called Strategic Human Resource Management and it focuses on people management activities, policies, and practices that promote effective organizations. The other course is called Entrepreneurial Strategy and it focuses on the synergistic effect of entrepreneurial creativity and strategic management on profit and nonprofit organizations. I want to take these two courses because there are not any business courses at Christopher Newport that discuss these specific topics. Both of these courses are 300 courses as well as 6 credit hours total so I would have to wait till the summer of my junior year to take them.
While I am still on campus, I hope to join some of the honor societies. There is a honor society associated with the Luter School of Business called Beta Gamma Sigma (ΒΓΣ). Membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest recognition a business student can receive in a business program accredited by AACSB (the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business). The mission of Beta Gamma Sigma is to encourage and honor academic achievement

Throughout history the National Honor Society has become synonymous with the best of the best. A school club that has built a legacy on students who exemplify the ideals of leadership, service, character, and citizenship. To even be considered for a group of this nature would be an honor within itself. Leadership is simply defined as the action of leading a group of people or an organization however, I believe leadership to be much more than simply being in charge. True leadership is simply more than being bossy and I have learned this through my experiences within boy scouts.…

National Honor Society has helped me develop their four pillars, scholarship, service, leadership, and character, into my daily life. To become a member, a specific GPA is required and maintained, which is more motivation to keep up academic achievement. Additionally, tutoring is a major part of our society, so having a good understanding of the subject you are tutoring in makes sure that you maintain the level of academic achievement the honor society calls for. I have always loved doing service in my community and being a member of the society has grown that passion for me in different ways, I became exposed to tutoring and community clean ups. It even inspired me to create an outreach through my ballet to a senior center.…

The training, discipline, and work ethic veterans receive from the military help them in the path to a successful college career. Having these characteristics set veterans ahead of their fellow non- veteran students who do not uphold these mannerisms. Yet we often read about veterans barely getting by at college, flushing away their G.I. bill, and failing at life. Although previous military affiliation proves to be beneficial, I have learned first hand of the many challenges veterans face while attending college. While in the military, veterans are accustomed to very detailed and structured days.…

Prior to beginning the masters of occupational therapy program it was as if I was an ancient wanderer in the dark ages, eager to learn new ideas and discover new places not sure what the world would throw at me next. Over the next eight years I found myself at a series of personal crossroads one encounters during life’s journey. Not the crossroad where one sells their soul to the devil for some magical power. It was more of one of those forks in the road, a kin to the Robert Frost Poem, where one path leads to life A and the other leads to life B. Crossroads that impacted my future, shaped who I am and my character, influenced life changes, which led to a transition that will influence me and my family for generations to come. I come from…

You only have two choices: Army or College? For many the Army was the only option, for various reasons. Whether escaping a bad situation, didn’t perform well in school, or following in a family member’s footsteps, the Army was a way out, and was often overlooked as being a profession. Most will say in order to have a career/profession you have to attend college, get multiple degrees, and after spending half your life in school, now you can begin your chosen profession.
