In order for a business to be successful, that business has to have a clearly defined business model and plan. Regardless of the type of business, the purpose of a business model is to provide a clear level of insight of an organization’s goals, mission, and strategy and framework of how the business will function to accomplish those goals. As a member-driven trade association, our focus is dedicated to communicating the value of community pharmacies as the face of neighborhood healthcare. This includes the efforts of fostering a business community and business solutions, as well as advocating for pro-pharmacy and pro-patient policy in all levels and branches of government (NACDS.org).
As a non-profit organization, what the association represents is dictated by the needs and interest of the members. The business model of the trade association is not based on only one pattern, design, metaphor, theory, or strategy. Further examination of the business model shows that multiple aspects of each are what create the uniqueness of the association. Osterwalder defined the open business model pattern as one that can be used by companies to create and capture value by systematically collaborating with outside partners (Osterwalder, 2010, p109). The association not only seeks guidance and input from its members, but it relies heavily on the partnership and collaboration with those members and other trade associations that represent the industry of pharmacy.
