According to the article, the company’s mission statement announces their decision to “Build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis.” The company has demonstrated that a strong business, one which they have been doing, does not shy away from charging high price for environmentally friendly products. What I have learned reading about Patagonia and Yvon Chouinard’s ideals is that there should not be a choice between business practical and environmentally friendly factors because they embody both through their creativity and innovative approaches. Hence, there is always chance that ethics will give place to greed one day. One of the issues I found with Patagonia was its use of the ranch network for wool sustainability. However, PETA records show sheep abuse (e.g. skinning them alive) by workers on ranches. In addition, I found out from the internal audits of the company that four years ago there had been multiple cases of recorded human trafficking, forced labor, and exploitation. Patagonia was founded in 1973, has a strong corporate culture, governance, and leadership that will protect Chouinard’s values and legacy into the future. Casey Sheahan is also strongly dedicated to Patagonia’s vision of environmentalism. Patagonia’s main competition is North Face as they have more in sales. North Face’s main focus is the growth of their annual earnings while Patagonia’s main focus is on eco-friendly production which continues to this day. In my opinion, Patagonia is still the best role model out there in clothing industry in terms of sustainability. There are other companies which can be considered role model such as the Seventh Generation that produces cleaning detergents, but is not as profitable and
